There is not enough snow to get a good ride anywere in the UP right now. I don't see good snow coming for awhile either.

You could also hear the skies hitting rocks the whole time. I would say wait for snow unless you want to buy new skies, slides and carbides.

I've already cancelled my first trip (Jan. 3rd) and thinking about throwing in the towel for the second on on Jan 16th. Long way off, I know, but the long range doesn't look good.
On the plus side, think about how much money I'll be saving. I'm not riding on crap snow or running the same trail over and over for hundreds of miles.

If you don't already know of it..............johndee.com is the place to go for UP snow reports.
I work with a few UPers and from what they have told me it is not good up there at the moment.

Actually, John Dee said there is a La Nina event happening but for some reason we are stuck in an El Nino pattern. Whatever it is sure is ruining the beginning of the season.

The forecasters have relied to heavily on La and El. There's always other factors thrown into the mix to blow their theories. This season is definitely one of them. From John Dee on down, it doesn't matter. No one can predict.

As an avid snowmobiler who has a degree in Meteorology, the main reason we are not getting the normal colder temperatures and snow is because there is no Blocking High pressure over Greenland yet this year. Although La Nina, and El Nino has an effect on our Winter weather, the bigger factor as stated above is there is no High pressure over Greenland. Most Winters by now we tend to get a hugh High pressure area set up over Greenland. When this is in place most of the cold weather in Northern Canada is forced to go South East into the northern US, along with some Alberta clippers. However this year with no Blocking High pressure over Greenland, the cold air for the most part is staying way up North. I do see things changing for the good after the first week in January. Most years I usually have about 700 miles on by the end of Dec., but only 6 miles so far this year.

It looks like in most area's, including mine, we will lose 25% of our season, before we get a ride in.

U.P. is no good at this time! Have a buddy who lives in Houghton, an avid sledder himself, and his sleds are parked in the garage until a good dumping happens, hopefully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I live 8 miles south of Houghton in Chassell and it's pretty thin. I did manage 100 miles last weekend from South Range to M-38 and back and a bunch of seasonal roads but that's about it!

So how does one build high pressure over greenland? I figure if a bunch of guys put their head together and got the nytro to handle, anything is possible!!!BIG BLACK WARRIOR said:As an avid snowmobiler who has a degree in Meteorology, the main reason we are not getting the normal colder temperatures and snow is because there is no Blocking High pressure over Greenland yet this year. For those of us near the Great Lakes This will work out. Just think when the cold air finally comes over the nice warm water what will happen. It will be Heaven on Earth.
