The oil filter on my 08 VL is located on lower left side. In the VL repair manual it mentions about removing bolts under the air cleaner element to change the oil filter. Looking under the air cleaner I can see like a cover the shape of an oil filter bolted on the motor. Is this like an oil filter relocator where you can remove this cover and install your filter here and move this cover to the lower left side to plug where the filter exists now? May be a stupid question as I really don't know and the repair manual makes it a little confusing. Anyone with any idea?

The item you describe is the oil cooler, it's best left in its present location.

Thanks sledder steve. That makes sense. What threw me off was the repair manual I have stating to remove the bolts on the oil cooler in order to change the oil filter. Must me a misprint. Thanks for the reply.

No problem, some people do in fact remove the oil cooler to get better access to the filter as well as get the last little bit of oil out of the engine.
Personally, I just leave the oil cooler alone and use a long handle pliers to access the filter.
