what are you guys running for an idle on your tachs? I had mine at about 2,000 to avoid clutch chatter, but am wondering what it really should be. It is also tough to a get reading of what the sled will run at once adjusting the idle... any tricks to this?? It it very touchy, the screw that is.

Len has the spec from Yamaha noted above.
Cluth rattles there on my Warrior.
I like you wanted rid of the Clutch rattle and cranked it up to 1,650 to get rid of the noise.
This cuts back a little on the engine braking effect as well.

If you shim your spider sliders you can get rid of the clutch chatter 100% and keep the stock idle.
Even with the idle cranked up a little, when the sled was cold the clutch used to clatter on my 05. Once I tightened up the spider/moving sheeve clearance the chatter was gone for good.
If the noise is bugging you, you may as well do it right.

This is a different problem, the 03 had a clattering noise form the gear reduction, not the primary clutch noise you are referring to.
Sync the carbs and turn the idle up a bit (+200-300 rpm over stock) to get rid of the noise on an 03

I'm fairly certain it is not the gear reduction making the majority of the noise. It does sound like it and I even believed it was, but everyone I know, including myself, who has tried shimming the sliders in their primary has virtually eliminated all of the idle clatter (and this includes one 03 RX-1 as well as a couple of 05s, and a Vector).
I can't say for 100% certain that your 03 doesn't have actual gear noise as well, but I wouldn't be surprised at all of most of the noise is in the clutch.
When I shimmed them in my 05 RX-1 I got them so there was virtually no clearance, but the sliding sheeve still slid perfectly (I spent a bit of time getting the shims just right). There wasn't a hint of clatter after that and before it sounded like a very loud diesel at idle.
This post has details on what I'm talking about:

Did the same to mine. ASk your dealer for the vector primary clutch update. Same parts.

Actually Yamaha's current method (05 Vector primary update and 06/07 models) is to install o-rings behind the sliders instead of shims. The o-ring method does work and it doesn't require as much precision to make it work. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to last as long as a well shimmed setup.
