Weak front suspension ?

I broke my suspension bad on Sunday. I got lucky because the right side arms collapsed when I had just slowed down from 100+mp/h. I broke the sway bar a week ago when racing XC 180miles. Does anyone know why my sled fell apart? Would it happen if the sway bar was attached? I was jumping the sled for 4-5 hours prior to the failure. This really makes me mad beacuse it's prime sledding season for the next two months here. Would this happen on a REV or a Firecat?

Thanks,

It does sound like you ride your machine pretty hard. You should expect damage and worn parts if you ride like you say you do.....
:ORC

Maybe it's the engine weight. The owners manual should state: Operate snowmobile at high speeds and take small jumps for extended periods and risk catastrophic suspension failure and loss of control. You guys are right about driving too hard, but I didn't notice any warning sticker saying I can't participate in the same activities as my friends, I bought my sled to have fun and not sit there watching. The arm dimensions on Revs and fcats look stronger or better at distributing the extreme twisting forces from jumping and hitting hard bumps at high speeds (triangular arms to spread energy not narrow rectangular shapes). I don't want another 2 stroke so I'll have to work with what I've got for now.
Maybe I didn't use much common sense when purchasing my RX but what can you expect I'm 24.
P.S. I was not taking Blair Morgan jumps, just little 4 or 5 footers.

Thanks for your input, hopefully this never happens again.

Keep us posted as to what the actual damage is (from the pic., I think you've got more than a broken A arm........ I'm thinking it pulled part of the bulkhead out with it)

The bulkhead I'm pretty sure. I'll post all of the damage info. once my mechanic checks it today. I didn't actually collide with anything it just fell apart while riding and I was mad so I didn't thoroughly inspect the damage. I guess I should have fixed the sway bar linkage before riding it again. :o|

Those flimsy little arms on a doo will twist off with *very* little effort. Think having to smash it with an 8" adjustable wrench instead of RX1 needing to be smashed with a sledge hammer.

Are you sure you didn't land it ON something? If you hit a rock or stump or something close to the inside, it could easily cause that kind of damage.

BTW: I've had mine high enough in the air that I didn't thing that *I* would survive.... and everything made it through nice and easy. The jump wasn't intentional, but thankfully, the landing was soft. You need to pick your jumps for the landings. If you watch an X, you'll notice that the landings are typically soft, because they aim the machine to land on a down slope. The hard landings usually end with the rider and machine going over and being finished with the race.... also, all those machines are replaced *very* frequently.

That sure sucks. I thought the front end was pretty stout because I hit tree 3 weeks ago with my RX1 Mtn at about 15 mph. That stopped me instantly, I went into the handle bars bruised a rib pretty good. The A-Arm and bulkhead held. The damage was the carbides and mounting bracket on the Simmons ski, the spindle and the aluminum steering knuckle it turns in as well as both outer Arm pivot bolts. Nothing fell apart things just got bent back 1/2 inch. Maybe the Simmons Flex Ski took up a lot of the impact instead of the bulkhead? The stock skis are much more rigid I might be in the same boat as you if I had them on.

How many RX-1's do you see in the X Games? The RX-1's are built for cruising on trails not ditch banging. You can jump the RX-1's but not excessively without causing some sort of problems. They are heavy in the front and if you land wrong, bam you got a problem......

I must have hit a rock during that XC race (no trees up here). I'm buying the Simmons this week, they must really dissipate the energy well or so I've heard. I guess I'm just venting and mad at myself for driving my favorite sled in to the ground racing and stuff. I would probably get more headaches from a rev or f-cat with recalls, broken engines and fumes so I apologize for questioning the durability of this great sled, it's most likely my driving style and not a design issue. The pros definitely out-weight the cons with this machine, I placed 12th out of 45+ racers two weekends ago racing XC 180 miles, blizzard conditions slowed me down but if it placed 4th in the irondog it must be a well built sled. :4STroke:

They are on Cats too, and this might not be such a bad thing.
I'd MUCH rather be bending / breaking A arms than doing bulkhead damage (and wasn't possibility of bulkhead damage the reason that the upper A arms are aluminium on the 04's?).
The belly pan / bulkhead design and materials are the two things that really concern me about having an 'incident' on my RX (knock on wood so far). :)

He's GOT to be putting us on. I don't remember reading in the manual, not to hit trees, or it could damage the machine.

I would definately sue Yamaha.

Hey Arctic, Hows it going? It must suck to get that sleds arm ripped off.

I talked to Sam out here and he remembered you. He was not prepared to come up and join the race. I had a buddy racing an F-7 out there and he must have finished right behind you at 13th. (at least that is where I heard he finished.)

I finally have the parts I need, minus a center shock, to get my sled going. I got a hartman 136 kit and a ripsaw. I am going to put it together this week. It seems like it will thaw quickly out here. We got tons of snow in the last month, but in terms of the whole winter, there is not a whole lot.
