When is ratcheting not really ratcheting...

did it first ride......I was pissed........adjusted track and have 400km and no ratchet.......will leave it and see from now on.

Adjusted the track to what?

I could be wrong but in most cases the ratcheting was on first rides and in less than ideal conditions. It was for me anyway, plus the sled transfer so much weight and gets hooked up to pretty serious torque....it didn't help.
Not sure why exactly but mine hasn't done it since I adjusted tension to Yamaha specs. I do think that we can probably run a little looser after breaking the track in and lifting the limiter strap a hole or 2.

I'm thinking this ratcheting thing will be old news once people get a few hund miles on the sleds...! I'm not worried anyway, mine is fine.

Well here is an update...After all I think it was ratcheting.

I rode again last night and didn't tighten my track before riding. Every time I opened the throttle hard it ratcheted bad. Even if I was going 50MPH it would still ratchet.

I rechecked the rear of the hyfax and I cannot see where it could rub now that I sized it up more.

As a quick test before today's ride I tightened the track up to the tighter side of the spec and took her for a spin in the yard...no ratcheting...

Long story short...She's gotta be tight.

Goddo.

I had the same issue. I had to run it tighter then spec or it would ratchet like no ones business whenever I got on it hard, regardless of the speed at the time.

I sucked up the front one set of holes on the limiter strap and my deflection is now at least double what it was before with no ratcheting. Give that a shot.

This is good info, thanks. I took mine out tonight, but truned around and went back home after noticing alot of ratcheting noise!!! I only have about 7 miles on it now, but I'm afraid to ride it much more until I get it taken care of. I also noticed alot of noise from the track at low speeds??? Anybody noticed this as well??I remember my Apex doing it as well just after I studded it. I never did adjust it, and it went away, so I'm not sure what happened to it to get it to quit.
I plan to stud my Nytro Wed. night, and I'm worried that the added traction will make it worse.
So, the theory seems to be to run them tighter for a while, and then loosen them up later?

Thanks for this thread, I also had a ton of ratcheting when I brought mine home. Last night I tightened the bolts in the back one turn and took it for a spin, still some ratcheting but a lot better. I didn't have a chance to go one more turn but that's what I will do when I get home. My question is what are the effects of going to tight (hyfax wear, track issues?) How do you know you went to far?

I strongly suggest going up one set of holes on the front limiter strap. I'm able to run my track MUCH looser without ratcheting in all snow conditions.

I put my limiter up one set up holes, adjusted to stock and kept loosening 1/2 turns until it ratcheted again. After that I tightened it 1/4 turn and no ratcheting since. In total, I'm now out 2 and 1/4 full turns from spec without ratcheting. This puts the track at double or more deflection from what is recommended.
