You have to adjust the linkages that connect the handle to the chaincase. One is vertical and one is horizontal. You adjust the horizontal to 27mm between the locknuts and then adjust the vertical so there is no tension on the linkage in either direction. It is in the Service Manual Chapter 4 Page 23. I found it easiest to get the track in the air and test it afterwards. Testing is done with the vertical linkage after you set the horizontal to 27mm. You can feel and hear it going into reverse properly and not so good.
Check also the bolt that hold the linkage to the chaincase is tighten. If the linkage is loose you will not be able to adjust it correctly.

I feel your pain. Mine would grind once in a while going into reverse. I tried multiple time to adjust the way the manual says but its tough to do because its hard to get to the linkages. So I took the brake caliper off and rode it in the back yard. I kept making slight adjustments and riding it in reverse, forward, reverse. Since doing it this way I have not had it grind once. Now I don't mess with the adjustable linkages...that was my first mistake!
