Asphalt Results 2015

Friday night - Union Grove, WI. "Da Grove"

WD40 rolled onto any rubber track makes it soft and when doing a burnout will get rid of the old crusty rubber and get it down to fresh rubber. New asphalt tracks have a mold release on them from the factory. WD40 helps with this.

New track and different gearing 22/40 (1.818) as compared to 21/41 (1.952). Did a huge smokey John Force burnout on my 1st pass and had pretty good hook up for being brand new.

1st time run, 68° 66% humidity with sunny conditions....but a headwind of 10-13mph.
Reaction .100 - 1.437 60ft. - 6.844 1/8mile @ 97.77mph - 11.245 1/4mile @ 104.99mph
(This was a good run as it seemed like it hooked well for being a new track. Nothing was changed on clutching and when downloading my run, it was down .200 rpms till the end where it climbed to 9,010. I am running the old 2014 ECU so my rev limiter is 9,150. MPH was down also because of the headwind but all in all a pretty good run.)

2nd time run, 65° 70% humidity with sunny conditions....still a headwind.
Reaction .131 - 1.441 60ft. - 6.835 1/8mile @ 98.10mph - 11.207 1/4 mile @ 105.72mph
(Similar to the first run, ran straight and consistant. definitely going to get better times once the track breaks in)

With this sled running pretty well I focused on the SRX I spent so much time getting ready for the Quick 8 class I started at WIR. Was supposed to race Saturday but with storms in the area, the track cancelled so the long haul special event cars wouldn't have to travel all that way for nothing. Anyway, the SRX is rockin again and really impressed the crowd.

1st time run, 68° 66% humidity and a headwind
Reaction -.025 - 1.318 60ft. - 5.914 1/8mile @ 113.57mph - 9.515 1/4mile @ 132.68mph

2nd time run, 67° 67% humidity and a headwind
Reaction -.009 - 1.290 60ft. - 5.871 1/8mile @ 113.73mph - 9.459 1/4mile @ 133.15mph

3rd time run, 65° 71% humidity and a slight headwind (this was reacting to a pro tree for reaction)
Reaction .272 - 1.352 60ft. - 5.934 1/8mile @ 113.56mph - 9.520 1/4mile @ 133.29mph

There was 1 more run but the lights messed up and said my reaction time was LB3A which means Left Before 3rd Amber. My time showed 13.59 @ 146.92mph (so that was a wasted run)

Sled was running great so I let Shag take my Viper for a run and let my son Andrew take the SRX for a zip down the track while I setup my "Hat race".

Andrew slipped and slided off of the line but still managed a high 9 second 1/4 mile at 133.41mph! 1st time ever on a sled racing asphalt!

Tim ran a hi 11 second on my Viper because the far lane wasn't prepped well. Tim spun like crazy with a 1.752 60ft. and still ran an 11.96 with the sled spinning till the 1/8mile.

With the new gearing I believe it helped the Viper on the 60ft. times and will get better with more pull in the mid range. That's why when Tim started spinning it built up torque and kept spinning.

My hat race was kind of a joke.... Basically you do it just like old time street racing where you give or take lengths, leave with a flag or flashlight. My race was against a very fast pro racer with a highly modified lengthend Hayabusa. I asked for a head start of 60 feet off of a flashlight. Before the flashlight went on, he jumped. But because I was ahead of him I didn't see him jump. The flashlight went on and I know I beat him to the stripe....I know it cause I never saw him, but his win light went on. Right away the guy at the end of the track was like "I didn't jump! I didn't jump! The lights never turned off!" Can we re-run it? I was miffed at why my light didn't come on. Back in the pits the guy who was in charge of the Hat Race was saying he didn't jump but another guy who was also racing said he did and knocked the lights off so I should have automatically won that race. We re-ran and the other guy was almost passed me by the time the falshlight went on so I knew the buddy-buddy system was in full effect once again. There were no timeslips on these passes.....sorry

Saturday 6-27-15
What a gorgeous sunny day! Temp right around 80° with about 50% humidity. Tried to stay out of the sun but that didn't happen....I got way too much sun.

This post will really prove to you how different tracks (Wisconsin International Raceway and Great Lakes Dragaway) are so different in track prep. All the years I have been asphalt drag racing (30 years) I sometimes can't put it into people's heads how you can have all that rubber making contact and still not get traction. This was one of those days.

As you can see by my posts above from "Da Grove", this was not a good day for traction. Even tho the sun was out, it all depends on how the track was prepped...look at the horrible 0-60ft. times.

1st time run, lane 1 - no changes from last Friday from "Da Grove"
Reaction .0401 - 1.7233 60ft. - 7.4085 1/8mile @ 93.51mph - 11.7499 1/4mile @ 109.87mph

2nd time run, lane 1
Reaction .0600 - 1.6204 60ft. - 7.2160 1/8mile @ 94.07mph - 11.5473 1/4mile @ 110.14mph

3rd time run, lane 2
Reaction .0166 - 1.6829 60ft. - 7.3395 1/8mile @ 92.48mph - 11.7079 1/4mile @ 104.93mph

4th time run, lane 1 (added more air to front shocks, went from 75 to 90)
Reaction .0805 - 1.6293 60ft. - 7.2318 1/8mile @ 93.70mph - 11.5940 1/4mile @ 109.10mph

5th time run, lane 2
Reaction .0443 - 1.5955 60ft. - 7.1840 1/8mile @ 93.25mph - 11.5178 1/4mile @ 105.63mph

Notice the difference between lanes? Mph? Also, I tried asking for more time runs as I wasn't hooking up. The sled was spinning all the way to the 330ft mark. All I could do is put a number on and hope I run the number...

1st round - Got a little cooler and everyone was breaking out so I dialed down just .01 - Dial-in 11.50, lane 1
Reaction .1320 - 1.7526 60ft. - 7.3938 1/8mile @ 94.09mph - 11.7321 1/4mile @ 110.14mph
(Won round 1 because the other guy broke out by a bunch. I knew I spun bad so I just ran it out hoping the other guy would break out....thank god he did)

Round 2 - Had to race my bud who races a very consistant ZX10. Lane 2 - Dial-in 11.68
Reaction .1388 - 1.4817 60ft. - 6.9259 1/8mile @ 93.26mph - 11.5506 1/4mile @ 89.22mph
(I was so hard on the brakes because it left pretty good, the best hook all night....I knew I was going to breakout so I just tried to watch the other guy close so I knew how much to scrub off my time. No matter what I did, I wasn't going to beat his package run. My bud dialed a 9.00 and ran a 9.0131 @ 153.61mph. I crossed the line at 89mph so you have to watch the guy coming at you from behind at 153mph and judge when you will cross the line in front of the other guy, but not too far as what I did....I brokeout. If I would have run it out I would have run (by my prediction and notes) an 11.29 or 11.30

Good news is my son won his class again, is way ahead in points and I am still in 1st place for points for my class because the guy in 2nd place went out round 2 just like me, so I still lead by 11 points. The 3rd place guy did not show up so that helps me out there. The guy in 2nd place will not be racing the July 25th race so that will only extend my points lead. Every week the points championship looks better and better! :)

Was a fun weekend racing at Wisconsin International Raceway.... but I am paying for it today with all the sun I got.

Friday night RSD sucked once again and don't think we (a few members here) won't be back. They have way too much on their plate for this night and you can't get any runs, no testing and best of all....no real street drags like we are suppose to have. Traction sucked this night also.

Saturday, the traction was bad until 2nd time runs, then the traction started coming around. Raced the Viper Saturday in eliminations and ended up losing by redlighting against a pro-bike -.0007

I had him covered which would have set me up to race the guy who is 2nd place points in which the guy had problems with his bike giving the win to the guy I redlighted against. #@$%^&*

Anyhow, Sunday (Doc's Harley Drags) was the best day for traction as I think Doc told the owner of the track to really prep the track. I'm telling you that it was so sticky you couldn't walk on it without getting your shoes pulled off your feet! Had real good 60 foot times but because of the hot weather and headwind...times were slower than usual for everybody.

Viper was very consistant and I made it to 4th round where again I was up against the guy who is 2nd in points behind me and lost because of a code P1338 that popped up as I was running down the track. The Viper spit and sputtered about 900 feet causing me to not be able to run my dial-in. The guy in 2nd place now is behind me by 10 points so I need to really get back on track and find out what is going on with this code. Still in 1st for points so that is good! :)

I will post timeslips when I get home from work.

Timeslips from Friday night 7/10/15....very hot and traction was not there. Ran the SRX and the Viper

Round 2, dial-in 11.38 - sun going down Lane 2
Reaction .1347 - 1.4955 60ft - 6.9759 1/8th @ 92.12mph - 11.5101 1/4 @ 95.63mph
(Let off so I wouldn't break out. From all my notes this would have been an 11.34 pass....won round 2)
Round 3, dial-in 11.36 - Lane 2
Reaction .0254 - 1.4863 60ft - 6.9714 1/8th @ 92.64mph - 11.4002 1/4 @ 102.08mph

(Won round 1 on the brakes)
Round 2, Lane 2 dial-in 11.41 (traction started going away)
Reaction .1284 - 1.5686 60ft - 7.1173 1/8th @ 91.94mph - 11.6883 1/4 @ 96.24mph
(Won round 2 as I passed the guy 1/2 track so I slowed way down to not break out)
Round 3, Lane 2 dial-in 11.46
Reaction .0858 - 1.5596 60ft - 7.1398 1/8th @ 91.38mph - 11.5908 1/4 @ 102.08mph
(This run I had a code P1338 pop up as I was watching my tach. The sled bumbled and I couldn't run my number %$#&!)

If I would have won my race I would have had a bye run into the finals. Still 1st in points with 10 points separating me and the 2nd place guy. 3rd place guy is 9 points behind him. With 9 races left...if I can just keep going a few rounds each race I have a very good chance of winning the class for 2015 :)

Saturday July 18th was cancelled due to the hot sticky weather and thunderstorms predicted. They called the race shortly after I pulled in at 8am.

Scheduled was a scooter race. These things are nuts!!!! 150cc scooters running 100mph in the 1/8th! Never did see one go down the track, but they were cool to look at. Too bad for some of these guys as they drove from Missouri, S. Carolina and other states to race this event. The Kymco booth was there and gave us some pretty cool stuff! So, the trip wasn't a total waste.

July 25th, Budweiser Summer Nationals 90° hot, sunny and humid!

*****WINNER OF THE QUICK 8 BIKES AND SLEDS!!!!!*****

After a long hot, sunbeat and sweaty day....the sleds did a great job running in the heat! Traction started out poorly as the track which wasn't prepped for 2 weeks because of rainouts had a lot of old rubber flaking off. But.....with the sun and fresh prep for the Super Stock Mafia cars running along with putting some good rubber down, the track surface was the best I have ever seen at WIR!

New addition for safety at my track, on my SRX was the addition of a parachute which worked flawlessly! No harsh pull and for the 1st time ever at my track I didn't have to take the hill to slow down....I made the turn off for the very first time! Now.....I received a lot of slack about the chute.....but here is the perfect example of what happened Saturday night along with others who have had some kind of failure. My buddy's Pro-Line sled that runs 8.60's delaminated a track on Saturday, 2nd round of eliminations. I have been hearing a lot on FB and other sites about the tracks doing this lately. He got a little squirly and stopped just in time before putting it into the fence or guardrail on top of the hill. This was a new track this year and was not too happy about it, but know he will be ordering a chute this week as things could have been much worse. People can say what they want....but I don't give a rats a$$ what they think as I am working with IHRA on more safety for myself, my buddys at the track and I am more confident of slowing down that if I ever have a failure with the track, chain or brakes failing, I will not end up crashing.

Will post numbers later :)

Hi Dan, both you and I know we aren't getting any younger....LOL.

Thank you, it really does work well and there is no harsh jerk....just a nice soft pull once it opens. The chute is specially made for snowmobiles and top fuel bikes. I got mine thru Stroud Safety, talked to Bob Stroud personally.

Timeslips from July 25th. 90° sunny with high humidity

Viper
1st time run, lane 2
Reaction .0240 - 1.5823 60ft. - 7.1124 1/8th @ 93.06mph - 11.4709 1/4 @ 108.99mph
(spun)

2nd time run, lane 1
Reaction .1748 - 1.5706 60ft. - 7.0765 1/8th @ 93.89mph - 11.4075 1/4 @ 109.86mph
(spun)

1st round, lane 2 dial-in 11.39
Reaction .2844 - 1.5648 60ft. - 7.0562 1/8th @ 92.88mph - 11.4188 1/4 @ 104.90mph
(spun....backed off because I passed the guy who had a terrible light. Would have run an 11.38, won round 1)

2nd round, lane 2 dial-in 11.38
Reaction .1178 - 1.4856 60ft. - 6.9895 1/8th @ 93.44mph - 11.3748 1/4 @ 104.42mph
(Lost round 2 because we both broke out. Had a much better 60ft. than anticipated. Would have run an 11.35)

SRX
1st time run, lane 2 (to test chute and just after they sprayed the track...knew it would be good traction)
Reaction .0784 - 1.2842 60ft. - 5.6776 1/8th @ 115.84mph - 9.3150 1/4 @ 136.76mph :)

2nd time run for Hot Rod, lane 1
Reaction .0074 - 1.3885 60ft. - 6.0574 1/8th @ 112.89mph - 9.6585 1/4 @ 132.43mph (spun and hopped)

3rd time run for Hot Rod, lane 2
Reaction .0172 - 1.3933 60ft. - 6.0772 1/8th @ 112.61mph - 9.6822 1/4 @ 132.43mph (spun and hopped)

Round 1 Hot Rod, Lane 2 dial-in 9.67
Reaction -.0404 - 1.4242 60ft. - 6.0994 1/8th @ 115.61mph - 9.7123 1/4 @ 132.16mph
(Lost round 1 with a red light, spun bad)

SRX for Quick 8

Round 1, lane 1 dial-in 9.69 (Pro-tree dial-in) raced Mark Netteshim
Reaction .2965 - 1.3014 60ft. - 5.8216 1/8th @ 115.62mph - 9.8101 1/4 @ 119.83mph
(Passed Mark's Pro-Bike at 1/8th mile so I just stayed in front of him to the win, on and off the gas...would have been a 9.30's or 9.40's run but I put a 9.69 if I was going to spin. Better to let off than to play catch up)

Round 2, lane 2 dial-in 9.67 - raced Rick Scott
Reaction .1348 - 1.4546 60ft. - 6.0918 1/8th @ 115.08mph - 9.7375 1/4 @ 127.73mph
(Caught Rick's Pro-Bike right at the 1,000 mark and hit the brakes. This time it spun so I am glad I didn't have a 9.30 something dial-in on it cause I would have never been able to back it up. Won round 2)

Round 3, lane 2 dial-in 9.28 (This was the final round for Quick 8 and I saw they just sprayed the starting line for us)
Reaction .1102 - 1.2896 60ft. - 5.8831 1/8th @ 115.49mph - 9.9240 1/4 @ 103.53mph
(Quick 8 Winner!!!! Steve Micelli had a really bad reaction and I passed him way early. Better than break out I let off a bunch just to stay ahead of him. This would have been a 9.30 something pass. Finally have the sled back to where it was running before I let someone get their hands on it last year)

As you can see, the difference between rounds if they spray or don't spray. Before the big show comes out (where the Quick 8 was part of the big show this time) they will spray a bunch for the wheel standers and Mafia cars as they want a good show. It's very hard to judge the starting line and if you don't see them spray....I can only bet I'm going to spin so I change my dial-in to something I know I will run.

The Viper, I haven't really been messing with the clutching since I changed the track and gearing. My rpm's are way low but I needed to concentrate on the SRX for the Quick 8. Now that I have the SRX flying once again I will be doing more clutching and testing on the Viper. A fellow member will be at the Grove August 14th with an ignition module to raise the rev limiter along with a little timing :)

Wisconsin International Raceway - 8-1-15, Hot, humid and a very strong wind that we could not keep the ez-up tent from leaving the ground, tie strapped to my Viper and the trailer....I decided to run the SRX all day. This day did not go well for me and a few others :(

Got a call earlier in the day that my friend Ken was having problems with no spark on his Pro-Line chassis, 1000 Crank Shop Ski-Doo. As luck would have it, I had a Digital 7 MSD box that I purchased for my SRX lying in the box. I brought it to the track and Wa-la! The sled fired up! We thought all our troubles were done...they weren't.

Another sled friend was having problems also so we all started ripping his equipment down to figure out what was going on there....after a few issues, his sled was running.

Headwind of 25+, no traction from the officials scrapping the starting line made for SRX times 60 foot time to be horrible and the 1/4 times in the 9.70 range. Will post times later. After my 1st time run, I remember the sled sounding like it had a fouled plug but the EGT's were perfect at the end of the run so I left them. 2nd time run I noticed the SRX popping on 1 cylinder and my number 3 cylinder EGT above the other 2. Made my pass and when I got back to the pits, the screws on top of the carb were gone. Unable to find the screws I took 1 out of the middle carb and put it in the #3 carb top. This left a gap and racing was about to start so I had to run it.....there was no time for the Viper to make a time run. With the gap, the SRX was having bog problems....definitley not responsive like the week earlier.

1st round I dialed a 9.75 not knowing what it will run. Had a good light and caught the guy, only to break out with a 9.71. Lost round 1 to the guy in 2nd place in points.

2nd round I dialed a 9.69 from my notes that says I would have run a 9.69 by my previous 1/8th mile timeslip. Against the guy 3rd in points, I redlighted by .017 on a buy-back. Lost 2nd round.

I'm still in 1st place by 11 points, so I really need to get focused and keep that lead margin going if I want to win this year. A few more races like this and I can get passed real quickly.

Good News is there were more cars to race Andrew in TCR class this past weekend. With his mom being a &*%$# she wouldn't let Andrew race her car, the one car Andrew has most of his times in, he has been racing for the last few weeks and doing very well with. With the help of a great friend at the track who was already racing his Dodge diesel, I asked him nicely if Andrew could race his truck and he agreed Andrew could race it. 1st round with a dial-in of 10.39, Andrew went up against a girl who can cut a pretty good light....not this time as Andrew shocked everyone with a reaction of .0040! He won 1st round on the brakes to not breakout. His timeslip showed he would have run a 10.39 so everyone was very happy to see that :) 2nd round (finals) was against the person 2nd in points in his class and I told Andrew to bring his dial-in from 10.39 to 10.38 and just run it out the back door. When I saw the other opponent redlight, a lot of cheering from the crowd, myself and it was awesome to see his smile when he got back. With 6 races to go for the 2015 points season.....there is no way that anyone will catch up to Andrew with the points lead he has.... so with that, I want to give a big and proud yell "WOO HOO!" to my Andrew for sticking with his racing, helping me with my pit chores and winning the 2015 points season for TCR class :) Watch out for this kid next year as I think he will be doing most of the piloting on the sleds.

awesome!! you are lucky that you have the chance to share this great sport with your son.

Thank you Thor452!
