The blue and silver was available in 1983. I had a red SS440, it was a 1980, the first year they were manufactured.
They had a mid year recall that lowered the front mounting point in the chassis increasing pressure on the front of the rear skid. My friends son road it until 1996 when he broke the rails on the rear suspension. He could beat his uncle and his friends on 600 liquid cooled Skodoo's on the tight twisty trails in their area and if in the lead could pull on the 600 Doo's!
I always wanted to drop the 540 engine in mine, I think that would have been a sweet combo! I was not sure of the years that color combo was available, but I do know my buddies younger brother had a 1983. I believe the owners manual is still in his brothers basement today! I used to have the 1980 manual electronically. Think I'll check and see if I still, have it! I think the SS440 was the sharpest design of that time!
Please keep us appraised of your progress or at least me. Brings back lots of memories! Friends brother had a picture of me coming up a closed ski hill with the whole sled in the air about one foot probably 40-50 MPH, the 540 should be a tremendous improvement. With the 440, 0-50 acceleration very quick then would more slowly wind up to about 80-85 MPH as indicated on the Speedometer!
