Yes that how I do all mine as well. I install all the ends on and then put them through the blue snap back, the green grommet and then snap them in place and then push grommet in and then snap lock.. I also remove the grey piece as you said to make it easier to snap and see.

Pins will click in when installed correctly. Blue part is a lock so the pins wont pull back out but if the pins are not crimped correctly the wire will still pull off. The new pins you want from mouser is the 35072409 https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/829-35072409 These are currently on...
