Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

I get the difference with the cart mechanicals, but a happy medium between the two concepts is what I'm after. Holding the car on the brake to start, with movement when the brake is released (clutch engaged) would probably mean a cold start/under 1500 rpm pull away. I'm playing with obvious "non...

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

Tried the car this morning with top weights out...I would have to say zero difference. Still have to rev it to 3500-4000 to make it move. I guess what I'm really after here (for starters) is like my old EZ-GO golf cart...as soon as you introduce throttle it just pulls away, no noise, just...

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

Weights are now at 77 grams each with rivets out. With clutch apart for good cleaning this time, sliding sheave doesn't "fall" from anything above 1/2 height. Soaked unit in my go to cleaner (Pine Sol) for 48 hours, scotchbrited everything, and it's still sticky near the top...part of my...

OK, anybody want to break the tie on these two opposing suggestions?

Also, does anyone know what the gap should be for the speedo pickup? Made mine adjustable, don't know if the sleds were...I have a cheap gps gauge but would like to see how accurate the stock gauge is with this setup.

OK, maybe I should have said "adjusting the weights" instead of lightening the weights...all new to me. How do you go heavier if that does bring in the engagement?

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

Update...got the blue x 3 spring, I can crawl around at 2500 (not bad) but the engagement is still similar, too high. This spring has a 20 preload, thought it would make more of a difference. Time to start lightening the weights I think...any ideas for starting this process? Thanks, Seann...

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

I've ordered a blue/blue/blue (short) 20 preload, will share results....

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

Tried what looked like a short white/silver/white spring (from dealer junk bin)...brought engagement down to 32-3300 (better, but not enough), preload is same at 35 by the chart. I’m going to keep testing...look for something with preload of 15 (e.g. white/gold/white), 20 (blue/blue/blue), 25...

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

Good info...with my road racing background, I'm with you on only changing one thing at a time. First time I've heard mention of roller diameters/effect, have to read up on that. Will post with softer spring update.

OK, "IF" I decide to lighten the weights, (after spring test) which rivet should go first?

Took out the weights, cleaned them up each are 80 grams. "8FP 00" stamped in if I'm reading it right.

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

OK, here's what I've got...remember, car guy learning to talk "sled". Photos attached, Spring free length 89 mm, did talk to someone about putting a short spring in to achieve what I'm after. Rollers are tight side to side and roll free, no flat spots no holes or mods in weights from what I can...

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

I'm sure it's fine for the sled, but in the car I want almost instant engagement...anything off idle, I want to hear a load on the engine/drivetrain. It's something that no sledder would ever want, a very different application of power. Minimal revs to get moving....

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

The spring that's in now is a yellow/silver/yellow, looking at the Yamaha chart it seems quite strong...35 preload, 2.5 rate, 118 total force.

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

What do I do with the weights if this soft spring is used?

Finally Austin/Yamaha test drive time...clutching way off

Early test has clutch engaging at about 3500 rpm, WAY to high for what I want. I'd like the car to just pull away with very low revs for street use, no "launch". So, having very little experience in this area, I need to know what is available for springs etc for clutches to bring the engagement...
