03 RX1 clutching??

Hi all....question for the pros:

I bought an 03 RX1, 121 this summer, (my first 4 stroke), but being here in Alberta with easy access to mountain powder I thought a stretch was in order sooo, over the last month we bought and installed the MPI 144 kit and a 1.5 inch camoplast crossover track....

We changed the skid up a bit by switching out the front H arm to the RX mountain style and put 8 inch wheels/rollers on her.

Now, here is the question...had her out twice, the first time burnt a new belt, (thought secondary was within tolerence) but shimmed it just to make sure and sanded and steel-wooled the primary. Second time out, (with another new belt) we did 140klm trail system in the foothills and didn't baby it....yup, burnt another belt....sooooo, why????

I am prepared to replace the primary (and secondary too) but need some advice as to what you guy's like to run....

I'm 215lbs and run 3 to 10k altitude...motor is stock except upgraded exhuast and because I'm gettin up there in age am willing to sacrafice off the line pull for better back-shift.

Any help would be very kind. :rocks:

What RPM is it typically running at? Do you see the RPMs go up when the sled ingests a little snow? Or go down when you try to go WOT? Should be set up for around 10,200 to 10,500 Rs for shifting.

Did you check the clutches Center-to Center Distance and Offset?

What belt are you using?

Did you drop down a tooth on the top gear when you made the mod.? The shorties are geared up for top speed. You probably need to go down at least one tooth in the top gear. Maybe two or some other lower geared arrangement of the two gears. If you go down much more that one tooth, you may also be looking at a new chain.

Hi...thanks for the reply.

I just went with the stock Yammy belts, (on the local dealers recomendation).

I bought the sled off a fellow who in turn picked it up an an auction so don't know the history of her but, did take her for a quick test before mod and she only has top end of 87 miles/hr so presumed gears must have been changed...never thought to check when we had it apart, (did find the shaft bearings were toast though so changed those).

I am still waiting for custom throttle cable and for now am running a 6 inch extention as I also put an 8 inch motion riser on....this in turn has given some problems with the TPS wanting to limit the RPM, (only on off throttle though)....WOT seems OK with 10200 no problem.

Clutches scare me (or I'm just not good at grasping the physics of them) so never thought to check or measure offset or learn how to. Primary is real noisy(??)...rattles to beat the band though...sled has just over 6k on her so maybe time for rebuild????

Thanks again for the reply. :drink:

Here goes. do not shim the secondary..leave it floating. Rpm,s should be at 9800-10,300ish at wide open throttle. Use only the yanmaha 8dn-00 belt
Your clutching will change huge with your elevation increment.
Anyway don,t shim the secondary; use the yamaha belt & keep rpm,s about 10,200ish rpms.

K...thanks for reply. I will remove the shims.

I read a couple other set up posts here and then went to check sled....springs are both black/yellow/black...is this a normal spring set??? And is the primary always so clackety clackety on this model??

Thanks Again :o|

Factory specs are on the main page under technical..look em up. Also do a search under clutch noise...5-6 years of info.

Stock RX-1 Primary Spring = Yellow/Silver/Yellow
Stock RX-1 Mountain Primary Spring = Orange/Silver/Orange
Stock RX-1 Secondary Spring = Pink at 60 degrees twist
Stock Rx-1 Mountain Secondary Spring = White at 70 degrees twist

The cluch and reduction gear rattle can be reduced if you set the idle slightly above 1500 RPM.
