My wife and I did the same trails with 4 other couples over Memorial Day weekend. My wife liked it so much she reserved a condo for Labor Day weekend as well as "The Pumpkin Run" on October 7 - 9th.

The "LaBrea Tar Pits" as the locals call it , is an actual trail. It's an alternate of trail 77 between Hurley and Gile.
Ryan is correct, the second mud spot was in fact "Joanie's Dirty Hole" at Joanie's Sidekicks.
