I'm looking to get more top end on my sled. When I bought it used with the stock 20/40 gears, top end was about 85 at best. I was hoping I would get 95 going with a 23 top gear, but have seen very little difference in top end. Everything is stock, including the maverick track. Would the track slow me down that much or should I be looking elsewhere? It would rev about 11500 on hardpack with original gears, now around 11200. I know the clutch will need tuning to get the revs down a little more, but I didn't expect it to be this slow on the top end with the 23 top gear. Still has lots of power in the powder, so I'm thinking of dropping the bottom gear down a couple of teeth. Any thoughts or recommendations before clutching?

Lets see
your overreviing by at least 500 rpm.
Your turning a 162" 60 pound 2.25" track
Sell it & buy an attak if you want top end!
Mountain sleds are not lake runners.
It,s like buying a bulldozer to enter it in radar runs.

Turk, all I'm trying to do is get the most top end I can get, without totally losing the bottom end grunt. I finally have a sled that will move me in the powder. I wanted to get some more opinions from guys who ride mixed conditions as I do. I'm not sure if I offended you somehow, but apologize if I did.

No offence.
Just being honest. Buy a nytro xtx. We have waist deep powder out in Brandon. My Nytro xtx goes thru it with eaze & hits over 100 on hardpack.
Apex mountain is huge overkill for here as the xtx nytro does everything out here you need to do a lot better.
You have way too many laws of physics to overcome on that sled.

sleddermb,
You don't need to adjust gearing, your 23/40 gearing gives you a 102MPH top speed, so you aren't fully shifted out on your primary at 85MPH, meaning you need to get fully shifted out.
Since you are revving over 11K RPM, I would add more weight to your primary. Also, before adding weight, try a new belt, sometimes a new belt can make a lot of difference in RPM.

Sorry, I should have put 102MPH "theoretical" top speed. You will likely not hit this speed unless you are running boost.

So what's the theoretical top speed for 20/40?
I've seen 115ish on the dream meter and always just backed out of it. With boost of course.
To the OP. What is your weight setup currently?
A good rule of thumb is 100 rpm for every gram.

I can't remember but my old apex mtn wih stock gearing but clutched for elevation would only get 106 on the speedo running out of gear and hitting the rev imiter but the guy I sold it too geared it up and I drove it once and thought i remember it in the mid 120's on the speedo.

With 20/40 gearing, a 1:1 CVT ratio is reached at 89MPH. This is not true "top speed" - the CVT can run in overdrive, but it is not efficient.
If you want to run faster than 89MPH, you should run a higher ratio than 20/40.
If you want to run faster than 102MPH, you should run higher ratio than 23/40.
Running too high of a ratio will increase engine load off the line and might slow down acceleration, so only go as high as you need.

I have 22/39 gearing which is close to your setup. I scared myself at 95 so the gearing is not your problem. Its your helix and/or primary weight setup. I have the Bender mountain setup(heel clickers) with adjustments for my altitude. I have NO complaints. And I agree, your overreving.

Apex Mountain
I have an 08 Apex Mountain that I use for cross country flatland riding. The first thing I did after unloading it off the truck before even riding it was take a sawzall and cut 1 inch off the track and make it an 1 1/4 lug. When I ordered it from the dealer I specified 22/38 gearing with a 68 link chain. This is the same ratio as your 23/40 however I prefer it because it puts less of a loop in the chain where it goes around the tensioner and is therefore more efficient. I also had the dealer install identical clutching as an LTX. LTX weights, springs, and helix. The sled turns 10,900 rpm and will run 120 on the speedo on the rr bed any day of the week. This sled is by far the best machine I have ever owned or ridden.
Do not buy a Nytro, I've been there done that. What my Nytro would do at wide open throttle, my apex does at half throttle. Just my 2 cents, hope this helps.
