My sled ran fine all day except the last two stops. It barely started at last trail stop then after shutting down to get ready to load up it would not start. It tried to fire but nothing. Code 12 showed up the next day. Turn key and get the normal cylce and it will turn over but won't run.
Any help?
Thanks

Code 12 is the crankshaft positioning sensor
Hopefully someone can tell you how to fix it b/c I've never personally dealt with that code before

Code 12 is the crankshaft positioning sensor, pulled it apart to test and found crank sensor was bad. Problem is crank sensor wiring is attached to the stator wiring as well, had to order whole thing- $340. Should have it in on Saturday, I will let you know if it works!!

I just got my stator 2 days ago. I though I was about the only one with this problem. It seems this is one more trouble spot starting to show up on our sleds as they are getting older. Mine lasted 15900 miles.
Also mine did the same thing had a hard time to get it to start the last time it ran, it shot flames out of the exhaust and took 30 seconds to get it to start, and the next day code 12.

Sounds familiar.
I rolled my sled out of the garage. When I went to start it to load on the trailer, it didn't fire. I treated it like it was flooded and put the flipper tp the bar, and it started up.
When I unloaded it the next day, it started and ran fine. I didn't shut the sled off since I was out doing a quick rip around on my own. When I got to the trailer, I shut it off because there were people in my way. It wouldn't start after that and the engine light and the code 12 came up.
Have you installed your sensor yet? Did it fix the problem? How much $ and is it easy to find on the sled?

Finally had a chance to get my new/used stator installed last night. Code 12 showed up until engine was fired then went away once running. Seems like yamaha could have a replacement crank sensor part rather than have to replace the entire stator at $340.00 (parts only)

It did fix the problem. I had to buy the stator to get the sensor, 369 cdn.
To find the end of the wire that the sensor can be tested. Look on the left side of the voltage reg or rectifier or what ever it is called down in front of your airbox. The large plug on the left side of the reg is the stator and the smaller plug with the blk and grey wire is the sensor. Check to see if you have abour 500ohms. Mine showed nothing on a ohm meter. It only took about an hour to change it once i took the oil tank off and the engine side case. I hope this helps

Awesome thanks. I should have my stator on Thursday. I didn't test my old sensor, but its probably due for a change anyway I figure. Will I have to rip the sled apart, or can i get at everything from the side panel? Any hints or order of operations would be appreciated.

It's not hard at all. Just drain your oil tank and and take it off and your right there. 10-12 allan bolts on the cover and thats it. You might have to take off the airbox , to work the wires through. I had it off tring to find the end of the plug, so it was easy them. The starter reduction gear will fall out when you take the cover off and it scared the hell out of me until I found out how simple it fits back in place.
It's an easy job I find. It's a piss off that you can't buy the sensor separate from the stator.

I was able to unhook oil tank hoses just on the top, then pushed over to the right as far as you can without oil spillage. Then took a bungee to the front bumper to hold in place. Be carefull of the gasket behing stator cover!! Mine came off in 3 pieces. I noticed my oil tank was weaping oil from lower right corner near lower mount bolt hole, put some jb weld around the corners on both sides and seems to be ok. Just one more thing to replace!
