Hey everyone just joined TY and just getting back into sledding after 18 years. Of course I went with a Yammy, an 06 Attak, all stock with 4300 miles on it. Had major darting issues at first but got some info from the TY forums and Mr. Berkstrom fixed me up. Completely eliminated all issues with the darting. Last week the sled shut down on me after a 45 min. ride it would restart go maybe 20 feet then shut down. Being just new back into sledding and not real familiar with the fuel injection or electrical systems associated with them, I took it to the dealer. After a day of inspecting they told me they found a seized speedo bearing which inturn shorted something out and fried my ecu. Regardless to say not a cheap fix. Today I had an overheating problem, started the sled up it ran for maybe 8-10 minutes while I was dressing, then it shut down. I restarted it temp light was on so hit the closest powder I could find and it went out. Then headed out for a ride and after 15 min. light came back on and sled wouldn't idle down less then 3000 rpm's. It was -12 C so wasn't too sure what the problem would be as I just picked it up yesterday from the dealer. So I got on the cell called the dealer and they came and picked it up to check it out again. Anyone have any suggestions on what may be happening or had similiar problems?

At idle the sled will shut it self down if it gets to hott. You dont need to let it warm up for 10 minutes. I let the ltemp light go out and then maybe another few minutes. Have you checked coolant level and all fluids after buying the sled?? Try all the simple things first this site should be able to guide you through them. Use the sticky at top of apex home page, Frequently asked questions. 9 times out of 10 its something stupid.

Don't know your trail conditions but a rear cooler might be in order or a set of ice scratchers.
I just got back from a ride with some friends and one of them has a 05 Warrior. Overheated 6 times or so. Trails were hard packed not much to cool. We packed his running boards and track with snow until later in morn when trails got softer and chewed up.
Yamaha installs them at factory now.

I,ve got a 97 Apex RTX, and had the overheating problem last spring, in the early mornings after a cool nite that froze the trails rock hard. I put the rear cooler in over the summer, and have not seen the temp light come on yet this year, even in some sketchy trails that had very little cooling. I would add the extra cooling rad at the rear of your sled. Makes a big difference.

The other thing to consider is that if the sled has never had the coolant replaced, '06s were known to have pure anti-freeze in them, which is very bad.
Pure anti-freeze not only freezes at a higher temp (something like +9*F) which is bad. I don't know about other people here, but in WI it gets down to -10*F to -25*F alot in the winter. It (pure anti-freeze) also doesn't cool/remove heat worth a $hit on its own. A 60/40 or 50/50 mix is best.

Ditto on the rear cooler, I installed one on my '06 Attak & never overheated thereafter, I highly recommend one.

This doesn't sound like a typical overheating problem. If that was the case I would also suggest getting a rear heat exchanger. However, it should not be overheating while just idling and the fact that it won't come down from 3000 RPMs says there is something else going on "behind the scenes." I'd be curious to see what the dealer says.
Sorry you have to deal with all this crap Fireattak. I just picked up an 06 Attak this year and haven't had a problem with it yet (knock on wood). Yamaha is known for its reliability so I have a feeling that the Murphy Law is in effect with you at the moment =(

Thats normal for a lot of the early models w/out the rear heat exchanger,my 06 attak got one,and every apex pre 09 has had one,and add waterwetter while you have it out, that helps to.fireattak said:Hey everyone just joined TY and just getting back into sledding after 18 years. Also the rear cooler prevents ice build up in that area. With a cooler ice will melt and drop it on the track for lubication and cooling to the skid wheels, sliders, etc.
My friend's Warrior didn't overheat all season until yesterday. We had good conditions until then. We'll have more ice trails as spring comes on.

who sells rear cooler?
Where can I buy a rear heat exchanger for my '06? I don't see a kit listed in the Yami accessories web site. I did see that they now have an HID lighting kit though, hmmm...

Try Port Yamaha.com they should hook you up with the right one...one cheaper alternative is to buy ice scrapers. If your light comes on pack some snow on tunnel and inside of track put them down and go. You should be good to go for the day. Helps lube the hyfax as well. I didn't over heat yesterday like my friend's Warrior did but I could smell the Hyfax melting. I wish I had ice scrapers.

Something does not sound right about this. A seized speedo bearing caused all this? I would assume they replaced the bearing. Did they show it to you? And it sounds like after the fix the sled is doing the same thing. If the speedo wire gets cut and shorts out it fries the ECU? I would think it would be fused. Does the dealer know what they are doing?
I also have an 06 and I have to run it down bare roads for a mile to get it to overheat. I do have the proper mixture of antifreeze, and no rear cooler. Is your radiater fan turning on?

Wow, thanks for all the replies and great advice! Well to start the dealer called me back later that afternoon from picking me and the sled up saying they had adjusted the idle and the thermastat setting and test drove it for half an hour and said it never heated up. They returned it to my house that evening all free of charge. I went out that evening for a 4 hour run and had no issue's and put on 140 miles the next day again with no issue's. So it's looking like my troubles might be over for now I hope, but definately will be looking into adding a heat exchanger and possibley the ice scrappers as well. Thanks again for all the replies it's great to see that there are so many people out there willing to help other's. Now we need to get some snow back, we lost most of ours in two days!!!!
