Just ran my brothers(7SKULLS) nytro and noticed smoke coming up from around the engine near where the headers are located. The smoke smells like grease burning on the exhaust but the smoke/smell only appears now and then.My belief from reading post on here is that the exhaust donuts are gone. How big of a job is it to replace the donuts on the vector motor, can you do it with-out removing the rear skid and get access by removing the heat shield and gas tank?Is there any other parts that i need other than the donuts and rivets for the shield to be replaced?Any input would be great.Hate to do this job at the start of the winter. :o|

It is a two hour job and very easy...

Pull off the seat and fuel tank (You don't need to remove the tank shoud just lift it carefully and slide the tank out)
Remove the rear exhaust pipe/muffler
Remove the heat shield (the one you can see from under the hood) and the clamps/doughnuts are right there.
Any bolts you need to access are through rubber plugs in the tunnel under the tank/seat. No need to even raise the sled off the floor/ground.

Thanks guys, plan on doing it this week as soon as i get the donuts which are $18.00 CDN.Pretty cheap price as long as it gets fixed.

Replaced all three donuts on my 2006 Vector this summer, nothing but wire left. Had 9500 kms on it. Fairly straight forward job and that link definitely helps, but you don't need to remove everything listed. You just need to remove the seat, gas tank and its cover shroud, or just move the shroud off to the side. Make sure you use metric size tools. You will need a 5 mm size allen bits to remove the donut clamps. The only problems I had were stripping the heads off a couple of bolts as they were rusted too badly. Also ground down the stops on the donut clamps so could get them tighter, and used high temp copper silicone on the donuts to hopefully make them last longer. Donuts are $10 in the states.

The instructions are for an Apex... a lot more stuff to remove to get to the doughnuts than on an RX or RS series sled.

On grinding the stops... I squeezed my clamps in a vice (sideways)compressing the "V" grove that wraps around the exhaust joint to make them fit tighter. If you don't squeeze or grind them you will be able to spin them on the pipe even when tight.

Thanks guys, got to ride the sled today and notice it was louder(even with the aftermarket exhaust)than normal.Could still smell burning oil and notice oil stains around the frame near the rear of the heat shield.Hope to get the donuts tomorrow. :exc:

Most of my oily smell on my sled I attribute to grease from the skid getting slung up into the exhaust. I grease the beejesus outta my M10, and sometimes don't even bother about wiping out the excess.

You could have a chaincase leak....watch your fluid level.

Lots of oil in the chain case,no leaks, checked underneath.
