06 Rage - poor mileage and ice build up

Second tank of fuel, averaging 13 mpg imperial (11 us). Riding fairly aggressive in a mix of powder and trail. Anyone have thoughts on things to check for better mileage. I'm 300 lbs so it's obviously working hard in the powder. Top end is fine, rung 100 mph today (yamaha mph), starts, idles and run's fine, just crappy mileage (comparing to other RS sled's). Temp was -25 degC (-13 degF).

Also getting ice build on the tunnel (about midway) that rubs on the track. I thought I had it cleared out, but after a couple of hours of riding (stopped twice), the ice returned. Any recommendations?

Second tank of fuel is not enough for the engine to losen up. It took my 05 1,000 miles to start getting decent mileage.
As far as the ice, lots of guys are installing a rear heat exchanger but I opted to change the tunnel extension to a Mountain Performance unit. It is higher and allows more snow to be ejected from the rear. I have not had an ice buildup problem since I changed the extension. Ithink it looks better and there is no additional weight as with the extra heat exchanger.

I think 13 mpg in deep powder with your weight is pretty good. Your engine report sounds good. Also ice build-up as you described in powder is quite normal as well. After you ride you may want to put your sled on a jack stand and run the track to clear the snow and knock off what you can. We've been lucky where I live, and I've been sledding in 15-18 inches of powder this past week, and you are on par with what I have experienced. Once your engine breaks in and you are on packed trails, you should get about 20 mpg.
 
When you stop for whatever reason, pick the back of the sled up by the grab handle and drop it about 4 or 5 times and it will usually keep the snow cleaned out from around the muffler.
 
Thanks for the input. The sled is broken in, I bought it used with 5000 miles. I'll check it again when the trails are groomed and hopefully it improves. It's not terrible, I had an indy 600 classic that I got 10 imp (8.5 us) on trails and 8 imp (6.5 us) in the powder, so this is going to be a huge improvement. I guess it wouldn't hurt to let off the throttle a bit either.
 
A buddy and I were riding this weekend and I had noticed my fuel mileage didn't seem right, it seemed worse than usual. My buddy remarked on the same thing with his sled (GSX) and we attributed it to the soft snow conditions on the trails we were on.
 
During the 05/06 season after our sleds were broke in we were getting 21 to 23 until we started getting ethanol fuel after which we got 20 to 21, mostly 20 [canadian].
We also have alot of ice biuld up that seems to gather on the supports for the tunnel protectors. These supports are bound to gather ice the way they are made. I don't stud so my dealer says to remove the tunnel protectors, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea. I have tryed cleaning all ice out except above the track and when I thaw this ice out I get almost 20lb. of water at times. I thaw my sleds out after every ride, catching the water in pans [old fridge doors]. We often have 30lb. + of water.
 
Just got back from day a of riding. Changed the plugs, oil and filter before I went to make sure this wasn't an issue. A real mix of riding - powder and hard pack in the ditches and some trail riding as well. When I got home I filled up and got just over 15 mpg (13 us), which I was fairly happy with. I've been using premium, but everybody seems to be happy with regular so I'm trying that for the next few tanks.

One question that never got answered was in regards to isopropyl. I haven't had any issues yet. Does anyone use it? Always used in in the 2 strokes and I figured the four strokes wouldn't be any different.
