i just bought a 06 nytro, and I have been reading about how some people's cam chains have been going and caused close to $4,000 worth of damage. Should I worry about this, or should I just ride it till it starts making noise.

You can tell if it has the updated one by a paint dot on the tensioner by one of the bolts, I cannot remember the colors between the good and bad though and couldn't find it in the forum. I am sure someone will chime in. If it was mine I would do it, especially if you are mechanical and can do it yourself, there is a very good right up in the sticky section of this forum. I helped a buddy do his before last winter and with two of us working on it only took an afternoon and we were by no means working fast and being very meticulous because neither of us had done this type of thing before. Just remember if you don't do it you are basically gambling with the engine because being an interference motor if that sucker lets go under any kind of load the motor is going to be trashed. Bent valves, valves through pistons etc.....

You don't need to remove the valve cover! All you need is a extendable mirror and a flashlight and look on the right side back of the motor! Locate tensioner and the mark is on the bottom! Orange is old blue is updated part!

I have an 07 and still am running my orange dot tensioner (3800 miles). Run good quality lubricants and pay attention to your machine. If it starts making a bunch of racket it's telling you something. You'll know when something bad is going to happen. My .02- It was a TSB, not a recall. It means some units were affected, some were not. My old GSX-Rs were supposedly known for tensioner issues as well and I beat them like they owed me money with the original tensioners.

Oil quality has nothing to do with whether or not the tensioner MAY fail. They are a mechanical spring loaded rotating cam design, not hydraulic.
I understand you are referring to a different design one on a cycle, I just wanted to clarify.
That being said, I got a great deal on an '06 Vector last winter. I knew all about the orange dot of death, and with 7300 miles on the sled, if it was gonna fail, it most likely would have already but for $100 vs 1000's for a total engine rebuild, I bought a tensioner, gasket, & new bolts.
I listened very close to the old one, and there was a very audible "whirring/rapid soft clicking" sound coming from it. With the new, updated tensioner, dead silence.
You be the judge. But, IMO, there is a reason Yamaha redesigned the part.

I based it off my experience of rubbish that I have seen left behind from inferior lubricants- but I catch what you are throwing (the gix and my TLR both used mechanical as well- my gm quad 4? Different story). Crud makes mechanical stuff sticky too. Either way- everyone has a different experience with things of this nature.
We both can agree- he needs to be the judge of it. I won't say I wasn't bothered by the orange dot-o death. I may have a gasket/tensioner laying around. Just on the back burner due to taking care of 5 other toys plus the house.

I agree 100% cheap oil is no good. I learned my lesson cheaping out ONCE on an old riding lawnmower.
Figured some brand "X" 10w-30 (I won't name names or it will cause an argument with someone) for .99/qt is good enough for the old girl. As soon as the engine got hot that #*$&@ turned to water & the engine started hammering & burning the oil. Blue fog out the muffler. I immediately shut it down.
I dropped that crap, went to the auto parts store and filled it with brand "1" and thank God no serious damage had occurred. Good oil is worth every penny.
