Hi guys...i'm looking for some help! I bought a used 2007 Apex with 22,000 miles on it. The prev owner put a ski doo track and suspension in it (i think its an M-10). I didn't ride it much when I got it due to lack of snow and when I did i noticed a vibration and occasionally a clunking noise as I increased speed which seemed to go away at higher RPMs. I took it on a long ride and next thing I knew I was having trouble getting it into reverse and pulled the side panel off and the bottom shaft bolt backed it's way out and broke thru the chain case! So I bought a new bolt and replaced all the bearings and seals on that side of the sled (and JB welded the case cover). When I put it back together and ran it I noticed an antifreeze leak coming from the water pump. So after pulling the engine to replace the water pump i found out the prev owner must have put radiator leak stop junk in it! I put it all back together and it runs good and no leaks but the clutch sounds like it's gonna come apart around 4000 RPM but only when the belt is on.
If you made it this far thank you....now my questions are:
1) did i possibly damage the clutch when I was taking it off since I tried removing it by tightening up the bolt and hitting it with a rubber mallet before looking it up on here and found out I needed a clutch puller bolt. I tightened it up so much I screwed up the crank threads and had to run a tap in it! UGH!
2) do the primary and secondary clutches need to be put back on in a certain way like timing gears?
3) could the motor alignment be out of whack causing it?
Thanks!
Bill

Make sure your belt is not damaged or worn out.... they can fool you sometimes into thinking there is a mechanical issue.
If the belt is good then the first thing I would do is remove the primary clutch and install another known good yamaha clutch and see if the noise goes away. Make sure you torque it properly.
If you cant borrow one you may have to pickup a used one from ebay or better yet from TPI.
Dont spin the engine backwards when removing or installing clutches.
The clutches dont have to be indexed when installing them on the sled.

I agree with sideshowbob, You should have someone look at your clutches that has experience with Yamaha clutches, have the primary and secondary rebuilt and aligned, with the previous owner putting rad stop leak in to prevent antifreeze leak proves there is jury rigging that went on with the machine.

I did try a new belt and it does the same.
Any idea what kind of money i'm looking at to get them rebuilt?
Yes def some jury rigging went on!

I would look for a reputable shop in your area if possible to have a look to determine what your going to need for a rebuild kit for your clutches, they will give you and idea on what your cost will be.

Barn of Parts for a used one or You could also send it to Thunder Products i think they could rebuild it for you. With that amount of miles you will have a lot of nickel and dime stuff go wrong depending how it was maintained by previous owner.

Hi Bill,
If you would like us to rebuild your clutches, we can definitely take care of that for you!
Look it over many times ! 22,000mi will and can take some time checking .lots of moving parts to a snowmobile that needs to be checked ! You can take off with the E-brake (Engaged) and have no idea with these machines , just saying
Look at everything. Sleds are a pain in the A. S. S. But lots of fun .

UPDATE: i found the problem...there is a collar on the back side of the secondary clutch that somehow came out? After putting it back in the noise is gone. Hopefully it will stay in there. But we need more snow to find out lol.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

Glad you found your problem!
Those usually don't come out, but with anything mechanical, anything is possible.

It came back out! After about 100 miles the split collar came out again. Any ideas what might be causing this or how to keep it from backing out?

I would bring this in to your local dealer for repair.
Or, you can send the clutch in to us and we can repair it.
