Swapping the bars ('06 bars on an '07 harness) obviously uses the factory controls and that seems to me like the easiest and cleanest solution.
The rheostat idea obviously bypasses the factory controls (you have to add the 5 ohm resistor to fool the electronics into thinking that the bars are connected). For me loosing the up / down handlebar rocker switch and display is not worth it.
I just got back from a 16 mile high speed run around the lake @ -10 deg. and my PowerMadd gauntlets kept my hands so warm that I actually had to turn down my handwarmers!
