I am 6'5" and weigh about 290 lbs. If I get a 07 attak GT do I need to get a different spring or can the ohlins handle my weight ok?

Thanks for your help!

If they stick with the spring that I test drove, you should be fine. You will have to set it the sag tho...it will not come out of the box for your weight.

me and 2 of my friends ordered new attack gt's at the show and the head mechanic from the dealership was there and he had all of us order the big boy spring.i am the biggest of the 3 at 5'9 180lbs.you need to upgrade! :exc:

I am going to do my best to explain this to you and he explained to me right off the bat and it was a lot to take it all at once.

I have an 06 Apex GT. I was told that it comes stock with a 4.9, and you can upgrade to the 5.5, 6.1, 6.5 or 7.1 Those are most of the options for the 06 GT. Most people last year upgraded and went to the 5.5 and it didn't really have much of an impact. So he reccomended going with the 6.1 or the 6.5 and if I was really agressive with the sled and weighed about 260/270 that would be decent. If I wanted to go with thee most stiffest of course the 7.1. After talking and i weigh about 260/270 he reccomended 6.5 would be the best fit for me where I would have the best ride possible.

He went on to explain about the options the attacks, and ER's have but I didn't really catch all of that cause I was more interested in the GT. But I would say after all the questions I asked and everything we talked about, the big boy spring would be the way to go, and if you are getting a spring and weight about 230-260 go with the 6.1 and 260-280 range go with the 6.5. But also if I remeber right on the attack or er ther eis no 6.5 options. So then the heavier i would go with would be the 7.1

Again these aren't of course in stone, but I think this can put some people in the right direction. I hope this helps. I am writing this quick before I go to bed, so if there are any questions I will do my best to answer. Otherwise give the gentlemen a call up at Port Yamaha in the parts department. Really nice guy and very knowledgeable.

I just returned from my dealer, and had a long discussion about this subject. I weigh 270#, and figure when fully suited up, and carrying my usual "stuff" on the sled, the total weight is close to 300#.

He is installing the 7.1 spring on my 07 Attak GT, and also checking to see if the shock damping has been increased for 07. If not, I will need to revalve for the heavier spring. If done correctly, this should provide my with the maximum adjustability of the rear suspension for my weight.

Who did you talk to when i picked up my sled last year the mechanic told me that the spring wasn't necessary till well over 300. He did something with the shock and it was a hell of alot better after that.

They told me the same thing, and technically they're right. The problem is that in order to get to that weight setting you have maxed out the adjustment at the upper level. If you install the 7.1, you will be set in the middle of the adjustment range, and have more room for fine tuning. ( In theory )

Since the new spring was reasonably inexpensive, I decided to give it a try. I'm still waiting to see if revalving the shock to increase damping to match the new spring is necessary. If nothing else, we will be able to try both of them side by side this winter, and find out for sure.
