No, I don't live in the steep and deep, but I thought the stock MTX would have been a little easier to handle. I prefer riding my 04 slightly modded RX1M.
Flying down the lake with the MTX at wot is scary, trail riding is scary, the darting is scary. It is very tippy and I am scared to drive the thing fearful of killing myself. So I have to take it easy. I don't have any money to spend on modding, but I would like to know what adjustments I need to do to bring this machine where I can tame it. So rather than riding on the edge of death, I think it may be easier just to sell it and look for an Apex.
The only problem is that I don't think anyone would pay the money what it is worth after taking it for a test ride. Any quick fixes out there that do not cost any money? I am in no financial shape right now to fork out $$ modify this sled.

Just my 2 cents, but I would stiffen up the shocks (possibly all the way or floats), put the ski's on the widest setting......and make sure the ski's are aligned. I did this and added Slydogs and the sled handles night and day difference.........

Fixxed the darting issue on my '08 by shimming up the stock skies. It made a night and day difference. I put a +/- 1/4 small peice of rubber under the back side of the ski rubber which forced the front of the ski up.
you listed quite a few common issues that the 08 MTX has Most of which can be managed with a little tweaking of the suspension.

Well, I widened the skis to the widest setting, I stiffened up the springs on the front shocks, aligned the skis (they were way out of whack) shimmed the rubbers and guess what...the sled is NOT FOR SALE!!
Thanks guys!
Thanks guys!
H ithere RX1MPete! Glad to hear you sorted out your problems!
A month ago I got my brand new MTX 162, I didnt even test the sled before putting the skis to the most narrow position and softening up the front suspension, I find this kind of funny since it is the total opposite of what you did.
I`m happy with the way it handles, but I agree there is some darting. (I do have to admit that I actually dont know the meaning of the word cause I`m from Norway, but I think it means that one of the skis ducks down and makes the sled lean over ?)
I personally dont think its a big issue, on my last ride I had a blast boondocking in the woods making some gnarly turns around bushes etc. But I have found out that you have to treat this sled just like your girlfriend, you gotta show her who`s the boss;-)
Wellwell glad you`r satisfied.

Darting refers to the sled chasing another ski track when trail riding. It jumps from side to side without rider input.
Oh gees I misunderstood! Sorry
Doesnt sleds tend to do that when the ski alignment is off ? (pointing to eachother?)

you are correct. If the skies are mis-aligned with each one pointed in (toe in) will cause the sled to dart as well. most of the time when people talk about darting they are refering to what woodsrider described. the sled will move back and forth without the riders input and at speed can be really unnerving to say the least.
that is why the manual says to align the skies so that they are pointed straight or pointed out 1/8" (toe out)
When the skies are toe'd out, the skies in a sense will cancel each other and the sled, in theory, will go straight down the road.

Mine would dart without following tracks on a trail. While ripping on the lake, the skis would have a mind of their own and would hunt side to side. This would be extremely scary to say the least when going wide open especially through drifts. Again, much better now. I didn't think it would be ski alignment because I was not on a trail where the skis would normally follow other tracks.
