Hello Fellow YAMAHA riders!
I am in a position to purchase a used 08 Nytro RTX, but I have been following the reports/concerns/issues with the front ends etc. ever since they came out. So before I pull the trigger I wanted to try and hopefully get some opinions from the TY forum.
This sled has had the '09 sub-frame update' as well as the 'updated ball joints' and the Floats were re-valved by Pioneer.
These are my questions:
1. Do these updates now make this 08 as strong up front as the 09's?
2. I know these updates do not change it to the new caster geometry, but if I add a pair of Pilot's would this get me to, or close, to the 09 in handling/stability?
3. Given these updates would (you) buy this 08 over an 09?

The 08 is just as good as the 09, don't let people tell you anything different. It dosen't matter what afternarket ski you use, it'll be a big improvment over stock. Here's the one thing I changed that made a huge differance. Toe out your skis 1/2" (1/4" each side) and that'll make all the differance in the world.

Thanks Snowman07 for your reply.
I am hoping others will chime in as well, my trigger finger is getting 'itchy'...

I got the new lower ball joints and the new sub frame in my 08 RTX as well I got the upper ball joints shaved down 2.5mm from stock. Like Snowman07 said on the toe out as well. Huge difference!! I got to come up with a sollution for studding my 1.5 Intense track now so after that I am totally in love!!

i am in the same boat as to get a 08 or 09. is the 09 really that much better? i know it has to be some, but how noticable? i have been jumping sled to sled last few years and nytro is next on my list. i want one to keep for a while. im a very tall rider (6'5") and sick of being hunched over sitting down. with the prices of 08's and the almost 3k higher price of say an xtx is it worth that extra cash? any of you trade ur old 08 on a new 09 and if so was it really that much better? is the 08 set up good enuff to tell if i like the ergos of the whole package? or will the "poor" handling not let me enjoy riding it long enuff to see if i like the chassis as a whole? ANY input would be much appreciated.

The nice thing about buying an 08 right now is that you get to take advantage of the discounted price, thanks to the stigma around the sled/model year. People got scared off IMO, due to the agressive nature of the sled. WHich doesn't give it as strong of a resale from what I have seen from other Yamaha models. It is meant to be ridden hard and loves it! The 09 got tweaked so the average rider would feel better on it in normal conditions, or slower speeds. I have the new subframe, C&A pro's with 8" carbides, GYT shocks, and the machined ball joints, and absolutley LOVE this sled. It is an awesome ride.

You can buy 2009 FX NYTROs for around $7000 all over the place..
I wouldnt buy a 2008 when you can get a 09 and not have to mess with it..

Guess I would have to agree with him. A new subframe to replace the 08 subframe will coast $550 easy. The 09 subframes are beefed up to take a better hit off of rocks (in my case). But as far as handling, you might notice a small differance. To me, it's all on how you set up your Nytro and learn to ride it. You will learn over time to feather your throttle in low spped turns, and tap your brakes after a high speed run. With the combination on the 4 stroke engine braking and slamming on your brakes makes for uncomfortable handling.welterracer said:You can buy 2009 FX NYTROs for around $7000 all over the place..

I've seen 08's for 5000. So 2G's goes a long way when also changing out the rest of the front end to the 09. With money to spare. I think an 09 front end is 1200 ball park. the remaing money will still go a long way. If you need to be frugal, if not, buy an 09 and don't worry about changing crap out. If you don't have the skills to do this yourself than it could be a little more expensive with the added labour costs. The revalved shocks should be alright as long as your in the same weight class as the previous rider. The ski thing, well everybody has their own choice on this matter. It could be a good deal for ya. I wouldn't be shy to buy an 08, if the price fits your wallet.

Don't forget about your riding style if you were planning on leaving the 08 model's front end alone. If you like to ride hard, and can get used to it, it will be worth it to you.

for me i dont mind wrenching on things but when it comes to winter the less i have to change or tweak the better. i do like to ride hard at times and i actually feel more tired when riding the woods slower. but some of my riding partners cant go that fast so i spend sum time on their rear bumper. if i have to fight handling the whole time on an 08 when riding slow maybe i should just look for a 09. although im thinking i can get a 08 for $4800ish. wish i could find a 09 for $6500ish. im sure some good deals will come up before next winter. the question might end up being xtx or the 121.

There was also some minor changed made to the rear suspension. I believed they moved the rear pivot arm (most dramatic), different valving, and some other things.
