I am in the process of upgrading my track on my 07 Attak. The problem that I have with the stock 1.25 RipSaw is that it sucks! Part of the problem with my set up is that I can't eliminate the track ratcheting. I am going to solve that this year with new antiratchet drivers and a new track. With the sled being as heavy as it is my first thought was to add some paddle and go with the 1.5 so I get through the powder a little better. My question is how much better is the Cobra track vs. the RipSaw in the deep snow? How does the 1.25 Cobra compare to a 1.5 in the powder and is the performance difference between the 1.25 and 1.5 enough to justify the extra work and cost?

I live in Michigan and do most of my riding off trail in the Traverse City area with a couple trips to the UP every year.

I appreciate any input.

There is a lot of information on this subject if you search for it. I'm sure many others will chime in as well.
The two main issues are:

1. Horrible approach angle on the monoshock.
2. Ripsaw is not a good powder track.

There's not a heck of a lot you can do about #1 above that's cheap or easy. From what I have read the 1.325 Cobra far outshines the Ripsaw in off trail performance.

I have personal experience with the 1.5" Ripsaw (121"). While it was marginally better than its shorter sibling, it still tended to trench a lot in loose snow. The only place I saw it make a considerable difference was those warming spring days where the trails turn to the consistency of mashed potatoes.

You dod the right thing by deciding to put on extroverts. IMHO, you'll be a lot happier with a Cobra track vs. a 1.5" Ripsaw for off trail performance.

If you do most of your riding off trail then go with the 1.5" or even up to a 1.75". Just have to remove the cooler and tunnel protection that's only needed of you run pics.

I've been running a 1.5 Crossover for 4 seasons now. It came off a supercharged sled and still looks good. That being said, Cobra and an aftermarket tunnel extension will suprise you. I ran my 06 1 trip with the Hartman 144 extension on it. Still 136 with a 1.25 Predator. I was amazed at where I could go! The stock extension DRAGS in the snow when the sled digs down. Great compromise,IMHO. Muffin works is a site sponsor and their products are as good or better, at a lower price, than Hartman. A few hours with your tools and you'll be a happy sledder!

The cobra is a big improvement on the attak (I made this switch 2 yrs ago). Better holeshot, better off trail. It does eat about 5 mph on topend. It is no worse to hyfax than the 1.25 ripsaw. If you are only changeing tracks with no other length changes, then I would go cobra,(I did). This is still not a great off trail machine, but tollerable. If you want a off trail macine, then either switch sleds, or at least add mountain skiis and a longer track.

I had 2 track choices when I bought my new track. The cobra and the intense 1.5. I'm so glad I went with the intense. It's great on trail as well as off. A friend of mine had a custom doo renegade with the 1.5 Intense also. He couldn't have been happier with the performance. You never did say what 1.5 track you were looking at. Originally I went with the intense for the paddle thinking that it would get me on top of the snow with the least amount of trenching. But after my mono skid was worn out and busted up AGAIN! I installed a cat skid. The approach angle is less severe then the mono and combined with the pilot skis my sled gets right up on top of the powder now. And I'm a short track. Go with the intense track. You won't be disappointed

If I understand it correctly I have to remove the tunnel protectors in order to fit the 1.5 track. Do I have to remove them if I run the Cobra? Can I still run the same size drivers up front or would I need to run the 7 inch drivers? What has everyone done for studs with these tracks?

Thanks for the info!

I have 07 attak, OEM tunnel protectors, whal bros no-slip drivers(original size---9 inch), and a rear cooler, with the cobra and no studs. Nothing hits, but it is close. I heard a 1.5 will make it also, but it must be like 1/2 mm away.

I did not remove my exchanger protectors. It's close but clears. I'm not running picks either.

Streching a 121" track to a 136" track requires a 7.5" extension to reuse the stock suspension mounting holes. Hartman makes a 4" extension(listed as 136 to 144 kit). Use the 4" extension and move your skid back 3.5" to make the 7.5" for the 136" track. The set back give a much better approach angle. Allows the use of a no slip driver without cutting the driver tips for clearence. Since you're planning on changing drivers, get an 8 tooth. It's 3/4" smaller in diameter which gives you an extra 3/8" clearence at the heat exchanger. Also with the smaller driver you can move the suspension mounting points down 3/8" when you set it back 3.5". With this set up you can run up to a 1.75" and leave the protectors in. For the tunnel extension get one that is for 144" just in case you go longer later.

All that being said I would like to mention the idea of going 144". If you get the 7.5" extension and 136" track and find that it blows off trail and still trenches. you still can just set the skid back 4" to go 144" track.

The Cobra is a great alround track. it really hooks up on the trail and is very impressive in several feet of fresh snow.

There is a 136 x 15 x 1.75 in fowlerville on Craigslist for $425. It's probably a 2.86 pitch. But once again if changing driver no big deal. Know this a 2.86 and 3.00 pitch 7 tooth drivers are about the same size as the 2.52 pitch 8 tooth.

I reccomend the 2.86 pitch as well. The traction difference between a 2.52 and 2.86 is like adding another 1/4" in track depth(very noticable). Some guys were running the 16" wide track in the Yamahas but I know a few bolts need to be trimmed for clearance. I run ski doo extroverts with the 2.86 pitch and they press right onto the yamaha shaft. Im not sure if they are still available or not as ive been running these since 06 on all my yamaha sleds and just swap drives to each new sled.

Ripsaw vs cobra, the cobra does hook much better in loose snow, not allot of differnce in the hardpack .
