FIRST TIME DOING MY OWN OIL CHANGE ON XTX.....CAN SOMEONE TELL ME THE SIZE OF THE ALLEN HEADS FOR THE OIL PAN AND CRANKCASE OIL DRAIN BOLTS ? I BELIEVE THEY ARE METRIC.......? WHAT WORKS BEST? SOCKETS OR T -HANDLES? THANKS !!

Yes, they are metric. Get metric Allen Sockets and use a socket wrench.

1. Be sure the bit is tapped in and seated before wrenching
2. Be sure you are wrenching the right way (laying under a sled can do that to guys)
3. Use anti-seize when putting it back in
4. Do not over tighten.
5. When replacing the washer, be sure the old one is out, it may not come out with the bolt. Two washers will make it leak.

I have stripped more than a couple crankcase drain bolts. It makes me want to skip it for the amount of oil that drains out of it.

Good luck,

you don't have to replace the copper washer it will be fine oil change kits comes with a new one if you want to spend the money on the kit. I find that by first trying to tighten the oil drain plug until it moves just a smidge will free it up and it will come out easy.

I replaced the allen head bolts with a #12 for the tank and #17 for the engine drain plug, then I torque on to 12 pds tank and 22pds engine. I have used the same copper washers every time. Touch wood no leaks so far. Closing in on 13,000 miles.

sorry, maybe i mislead..........was looking for the metric socket size to remove the drain bolts ?

How much oil is retained in the crankcase vs the tank?
