1st oil change

So i have a new 2011 se. Got 275 miles on it so far. Im most likely done for the season. So.... Next fall when i start prepping sled should i go ahead and do the 1st oil change early(275 miles vs. 500 miles) or wait and get a few more miles on it then change the oil? If i wait there is the potential that i will exceed the 500 mile mark before i am able to change the oil, could be 700 miles give or take. So what would you think is best? Changing it at the beginning of the season, earlier than the 500 mile mark and being good to go for the season or waiting?
 
Change the oil and filter before putting it away for the season...grease everything up too.
 
I always do it in the fall. Everything (toys) i always do prior to the start of the season. Boat i do in the spring. Sled in the fall. My concern is do i need to wait
For the 500 mile mark or do it ahead of schedule (275 miles) and be good to go from there onward?
 
Do it now, most wear occurs early on. Changing oil now is better than later...you don't want carbon, dirt, metal particles sitting in your engine all summer...better with fresh oil. Same goes for greasing the sleds, prevents rust from forming in the bushing and bearings.
 
Yeah i always grease after trips and before putting away. Nice to see all the water being pushed out by the grease. I also coat the sled in silicone spray lube. I hate corrosion and rust.
 
I'm in the same situation with only 277 miles on my 2012. I do like the idea of storing her with fresh oil
 
it is a tough call as the original oil is designed for break in and that is supose to be 500 miles but the bulk of the "break in" happens in the first hour of running the sled. i would change the oil and put in the semi synthetic and run it till the 700 or so mark you feel will be the next oppertunity to change it and then change over to the full synthetic with fresh filter. but thats just my two cents. you will find more opinions then butt holes on here for this question.

Their is no such thing as "break-in" oil (Although Amsoil just came out with one)

Break in oil that comes in anything motorized is just simply the first oil that was put into a motor, it is nothing special, no extra additves, no extra bling, nothing.

People refer to it as break in oil because it's the first oil that is responsible for breaking in the engine, nothing more.

In regards to the OP's first post, dump it now like has already been mentioned, it is full of wear products, carbon, acidic properties etc and will do more harm to your engine than good.
 
Is oil change procedure the same for the new apexs as the opd apexs. Filter the same. I will get a napa gold filter so imdont have to make a trip to the dealer. I believe i still have the napa gold filter number somewhere. 3.5qts, then run motor and top off?

I'm not sure how much the Apex takes but if you have a manual, it is all in there.

On my Vector, I believe it says to add 2 first then check then add the remaining?
I usually add almost 2 1/2 then use the remaining from 3 to top it up.
When I went by the manual the first time I changed my oil, my oil light came on so I have never followed it since as it was not enough oil imo and the sleds!
 
Break in oil came from the old days were you had to run a thinner or different oil for break in I believe. Due to tolerances weren't as good or consistent or materials etc as now.
I haven't heard of anyone using it now.
 
royal purple makes a break in specific blend too but by break in oil i mean that it is what yamaha wants you to run for the first 500 miles of the sleds life it is not a synthetic blend it allows for the materials to wear in properly. if you switch to synthetic oil too soon it will prevent wear that the motor needs.
