2001 Yamaha Grizzly 600 4X4. I am hearing a ratcheting noise when I first start the atv. It is only for a few seconds when I start it. One source told me it is the starter going bad....another source told me it is a normal Yamaha thing. (starter engaging the flywheel or something like that?) Any comments?
Also, I called the dealer for a qoute on a new starter and they said $400 for a starter plus labor. So about $550 in total.
I ordered the service manual on ebay for my grizzly, but how hard is it to change out a starter if I need too? Can a normal person do this? Anyone ever done it before?

i did the one on a big bear. it is not hard at all on that bike. from what i have see it should be the same on your grizz. just make shure you get the starter with the proper rotation. and aftermarket should have that starter for cheaper than the dealer. i bought the one for the bear at my local starter rebuilder.
