hi all... This is my first post on this forum. I have read lots of info and I have learned a lot on here already. Thank you in advance for what is already out there......... Please bear with me the grizzly is my first atv and I bought it second hand so I am playing catch up. My problem is with the ultramatic. I noticed it was not holding back very well on descents and I would get a little squeel when I would first crack the throttle everywhere else. I figured it needed a new belt and replaced it. Still have same problems. My buddy came over and said your idle is too fast slow it down. Now high range still feels like it is freewheeling down hill but it seems to do better in low range now but I have gained a gnashing noise that sounds like something is trying to engage over and over when i got down hill and at idle it sounds like something is spinning in need of grease. All noises seem to be coming from around the sheave cover. The atv has not been abused nor in water/mud pitts but I plan on switching back to the old belt and seeing if noise continues and then pulling the primary sheave off and cleaning out the rollers and applying new yamaha lube. Any other ideas or can anyone explain in laymans terms how the ultramatic holds back the atv? I have seen grizzhoppers video on the cvt and watched the one on the yamaha service cd and they helped me understand how the belt runs on the sheaves but still dont know how it engine brakes. By the way what a brain trust we have in grizzhopper. I cant wait for his links to start working. Any help suggestions explanations much appreciated.

Welcome, wvtechnician... and thank you for the kind words.
The CVT will downshift (backshift as some like to call it) as a result of the secondary spring, but the actual engine "braking" occurs in the wetclutch as the one-way bearing will resist being turned in the wrong direction.
With the belt off, try turning the sheave in both directions. It should be very difficult in one direction and very easy in the other. That is the one-way bearing working. If it is equally easy in both directions, the one-way is shot or damaged.
This can also be tested to some extent without removing anything. Put it in high range without the engine running, but warmed up. try pushing it backward and then forward. You should feel the one-wayworking. It will be very hard to move one way and easy in the other.
