I recently purchased a '05 Rage leftover. I've got 400 miles on it and it has overheated twice--once at low speed in marginal snow and once on groomed trail 60mph 2o mile run. I've had to add coolant twice in those 400 miles and have an appointment with the Dealer to see if/where the leak is. The Dealer told me that there is a rear heat exchanger accessory for the '05 Rage. Assuming they fix the leak, is there any reason to buy the additional heat exchanger? Thanks.

We have the 06 Rages, they came stock with the rear heat exchangers. The snow and ice will splash off track and help cool the sled. If you stud the Rage, especially with the heat exchanger, you want to modify the tunnel protectors to keep the studs from hitting when sled bottoms out. Also some sleds had the antifreeze/ mixture off,too much coolant, not enough water. plowking

As plowking said I would check the coolant also. I have an 05 vector with no rear hear exchanger and have never overheated it unless it was sitting idling for a long period of time. I don't know why the rage would be any different but I suppose if yamaha added a rear exchanger they must have seen problems somewhere.

Frano... Start with the simple things 1st...
( like plowking stated.. check the coolant ratio...)

.... Could there be air in the system.... ? it'll cause an overheat if it's a large( medium size also) pocket of air...

"burp' it if needed....

then continue with other troubleshooting ideas.... as we'll be sure to get more input from the TY gang...

;)!

I too have/had an overheating problem every once in a while in marginal snow conditions and when its warm out temp wise. I got a rear heat exchanger last year from my dealer at dealer cost ($40). They knew then they had an issue with this. My buddy has an 2002 Viper that he had the same issues with , but after installing the heat exchanger...no issues. We have had good snow this year so i have not encountered the problem yet.

Good thing you got it last year, Yamaha found out they have a closed market and raised the price to 90.00 Been riding yamahas since 1967 and their attitude seems to be they dont care Normt

The kit number has been superceeded to a $350.00 unit. My dealer is working with Yamaha to get the old $85 price since I just bought it. BTY, how do I "burp" the system? Thanks folks, you have been a great help. I've owned most sleds that Yamaha has built and never had cooling issues (even my SRX used the same way did not overheat).

warm up yure sled to operating temp......shut it off and let it sit for about 15 min......SLOWLY lift the release lever on the coolant cap.....yu should hear air escape....if any is in there......let the sled cool down...then top off coolant.

yu may want to check track tension......a tight track will cause this also.

4 of us rode on the 1st snow in dec . The top 2" of snow was a hard glaze that our tracks didn't break through. 4 sleds, 1- 08 apex, 2- 05 rages, & a 08 vector.
We all had our warning lights come on within a few miles of each other.
The problem was that there was little or no snow hitting the heat exchangers. We would stop and pack our running bds. with snow every 20 min. or so.
since then the same 4 sled have ridden 'decent" snow without any more cooling issues.
I think it might have been the low snow cond. you rode in.

I changed my oil and filter today and found the lower engine hose l
keaking. I'll have my dealer fix this week.
