No, it's not just a pipe. It's a complete heat exchanger. Probably 5 by 14 inches. you do have to cut-out the hole a little for the fitting that attaches the heater hose,but otherwise it's a perfect fit. A must have for sure.
I guess maybe I was not clear. I know what guys are putting in is a complete exchanger. But stock I don't recall seeing anything back there other than a pipe. I ran in very icy conditions with almost no snow getting thrown into the front exchanger last year and never saw my temp lite come on. (05 RX-1) I'm thinking of putting the gauge on to see where it runs temp wise, but what temp is "overheating" or at what temp does the idiot lite come on?
Not sure off the top of my head what the temp is for the "idiot light", but that info has been posted on this site. A search should find it. My light was always coming on even when it wasn't icy but very hardpacked. I know the rear heat exchanger was only about $44.00 + labor, but my dealer didn't end up charging me anything. I ride mostly groomed hardpacked trails up here so it was a must.
