Hello- I have a 06 Vector (500 miles) and a 06 Venture (1400 mi). The Vector was purchased new last spring, the venture new in late 05. I just came home from a 300 mile trip and decided to look at the spark plugs that I installed new this year. All three plugs in the vector were a very light gray on the porcelon, almost white. To me it looked like a lean condition, so I decided to look at the venture plugs as well. They were about the same, almost white porcelon, just a hint of gray. The plugs are ngk cr8e , factory recommended. Both machines have the same 973 engine & carbs, etc. Last tank of gas was 93 octane (all I could get) but normally I burn 87 or 89 octane.

just wondering, has anyone checked their plugs in similiar engines and how do they look?

I called the dealer and he said these engines are set up very lean and being 4-strokes I shouldn't expect to see the light tan color. But The factory book says the plugs should be light tan or gray. I guess I'm okay with this, but just going by the factory book it sounds like my plugs are running a little lighter than normal and I don't want to burn a hole in a piston or anything like that.

Thanks,
dc

FWIW - I dont believe that these sleds are set lean....mines on the fat side all the way the temp range. Wish my plugs were lighter.....not all engines are exactly the same.

Look at MaxMad consistently getting 20 mpg. His motors intake and exhaust passages must be nearly perfect. Mine?? -- the guy checking the motor castings must have taken a quick snooze and a rough casting (mine) got by.

Hey pro116....what if I run a hotter plug....or colder plug?

I've checked my mileage on both the vector and venture and both are getting 19 mpg; at least on the last tank. And it was as precise as I could get filling up into the neck both times. The machines were also pushed very hard while on these trips, so I have to give Yamaha credit on the engines. They perform and get great mileage at the same time.

Clean, light plugs are a good thing in a 4 stroke. You won't burn it down like you could with a 2 stroke. If it runs good and the fuel milage is good, don't mess with it. The worst milage I remember getting was 17 mpg on a weekend of really hard riding. I'm used to 20-21 mpg.
