2007 attak burning a litre of oil every 1000 miles. sled has only 3500miles on it. What could be the problem. Sled is still under warranty.

dealer

Take your sled into the dealer asap.If its still under warranty you should have it looked at before the snow flies. It will take yamaha a while to get your sled fixed.Shane

im in the same boat as you 07 attak burning 1 L every 1000 kms...been back and forth sled has 2 weeks warranty left so well see what happens..

Make sure the problem is reported and registered in the Warranty database before the expiery date. Talk to your dealer and have him take your sled in for inspection, and get the warranty claim registered ASAP.

Mine uses it also..if I push it. I'm big and run these hills and mountains.
I switched to 0-40 syn that seems to help with usage.

Wow. I thought yamaha took care of this problem back in 05 with the last generation rx-1. I know they added a ring or two on the pistons to fix this issue at some point between 03 and 05. Kinda makes me wish I would have bought a 2 stroke if im gunna burn oil anyway....

shanksyamaha - yes they fixed the problem in 04 with new rings. They did not add any more rings to the pistons, pistons still have 2 compression rings, and 3 oil rings below the compression rings. New material for the rings was the change Yamaha did to fix the oil consumption.

There is not a general oil consumption problem anymore, a few still uses oil tho, if you manage to hurt your engine one way or the other your engine can start to use oil. If your running your sled at WOT most of the time then 1 liter oil in 1000 kms is not much. Same things happens to superbikes, I know I used to own and drive a Kawasaki ZX9R putting out 143 HP at 10500 rpms, it would pull straight into the rev limiter at 12000 rpms, and yes I did use oil, had to refill during summer season a few times every summer.

OIC... thanks for the clearification. I was just thinking that since this motor in a bike is able to pull like 13k rpm's it should have no problem running 10k all day. I guess if your running it that hard all the time you could expect to burn some oil. I ran the snot out of my 05 rx-1 and even after I put the turbo and ran the lake every day I didn't seam to use any oil... I run Cranberry Lake all the time for 5-9 miles a WOT but I run good oil and keep it changed. I hope my new apex can handle it...

I have 5 buddies with the same sled. we go on trips and they don't burn and once of oil. just wondering if yamaha is going to give me the gears.

I burn 1 litre a season (1500kms in the mountains=lots of full throttle). Always have from new. I'm running Mobile 1 Synthetic.

I guess if your trail riding at 1/4 throttle all day this may be high but your likely at 10,000rpm (shift rpm) all day as well so maybe you'd expect the same oil usage. It's still about 1/15th of what you'd expect to go through on a 2smoke (I think...it's been awhile).

my streetbike burns no oil, oil flows better above 50 degrees >valves get hit with oil fast<.i know are sleds don't flow that fast when it's cold out,i know it's a different set-up but still, oil is thick when cold.some people start there sleds and go as soon as the light shuts-off! i let my sled run for about 5 min when COLD before i go,burn about 2oz in a season, and yes i do squeeze the loud trigger often.the thinner the oil the better i think+you get a little more power.

I do it the same way with my sleds, let it idle until hot, then I ride slowly for the first few miles before I put a load on the motor.

tomanytoyz - What streetbike do you ride?

My '05 RX1 used very little, 500 to 700ml between oil changes (3500kms) and my '08 APEX uses 150 to 250ml in 3500kms I've got 10.000kms so far...I run alot of WOT, lakes and rail beds but like mentioned in previous post, I warm her up and ride easy for the 1st 10-15min. even after stopping for lunch or prolonged amount of time I always like to warm things up nice and easy the 1st few minutes.

Oh another thing you have to watch for is the CRANKCASE vent tube tends to freeze-up and clog and this will tend to make it use oil...make sure to have a good size slit in your tube 2" or so and also check it every so often...specialy if the sleds sleeps outdoors and doesn't get a chance to thaw out every once and a while, I've seen some pretty good size chuncks of ice come out of them.

From day one I have ridden my sled like I stole it and now has 3500 miles on it. If i'm not WOT I am slowing down so I can either corner, come to a stop or WOT again. To this day my sled DOES NOT burn and ounce of oil. ;)!
