I have a buddy that thinking about buying a 2010-2014 xtx. What are the good and bad points of that sled? I know nothing about them. I haven't even rode one, ever. Thanks

Good: reasonably priced right now; amazing engine; great power; rider-forward posture; excellent after-market with solutions to most of the cons (I'll list them in parenthesis below). Fit / finish is excellent; easy to find parts for it; well engineered, especially for the price point.

Bad: hyfax life (excel wheels / DuPont sliders); weird stock steering geometry (oft steering relocating kit); exhaust donuts let go eventually (OFT copper donuts); difficult to lean over on one ski (Mountaintech front end); engine pukes out oil if you roll it (fourstrokesolutions kit); some run hot (scratchers, tunnel cooling kit); rear suspension needs to be purposefully dialed in for the rider (STAR kit, hygear springs/shock revalve); but most of all - weight. No cure for that unfortunately.

I'm sure there are more to each list. My principal reason - longevity. Now that I have mine mostly dialed in, I intend to keep it for a long time (without having to do top ends every couple of years etc.). Not a high-marking animal, but excellent trail manners and still great to boondock with.

Good reply above me. Can you tell us a little more about his riding style? I can give you my list of pros/cons then.

50/50 on trail and off. I don't think the power of that 3holer is gonna cut it for him tho

What is your buddy comparing the Nytro to?

Similar to the poster above I first bought my Nytro with reliable power in mind. About 6 years ago I was looking to upgrade to a 2 stroke 800 with a budget of $6,000. My trouble was at that time most of them had bad reputations about eating pistons... A lot of my friends trail rode so I knew I'd but putting on some miles, and I put on nearly 5,000 miles the first 2 winters I owned my Nytro! I started looking at Yamaha 4 strokes but I wanted something with a more aggressive rider in mind and a 144" track option, I wasn't overly concerned with top end speed. With what was available at the time that put the Nytro out in front for me. All said and done I'm very happy with my purchase - it's never let me down, has great power, I have fun tinkering with it, there's great forum support, and it's not a standard off the shelf sled.

Here's my take on 50/50 riding thinking about my 2009 XTX

Trail
- Lots of low end torque which makes it a blast to ride
- Maybe it's just my current setup but my sled definitely rides better on trail the harder I push it
- Depending on track lug height hyfax life can be short - I run a 1.75 backcountry with Excell wheels and Dupont slide, I haven't changed slides for several thousand miles with lots of trail riding...
- Personally I don't think weight is as huge of an impact on the trail unless you're comparing to a dedicated trail sled, though the longer tracks and taller lugs tend to push more in the corners
- I spent a lot of time with the heavy steering woes, but every year my suspension tuning adjustments make the sled better and better
- Trail range suffers a bit with the 7 gallon OEM tank, I believe all my Skidoo buddies have 12 gallon tanks and get similar fuel economy...
- Very limited wind protection on this sled but I've had no issues with good gear and my Yamaheater setup

Off trail
- Reports are out there of sleds puking all their oil out when rolled over - best solution is a rollover valve and tether combo, to me tethers should be on every sled....
- Definitely a nose heavy sled in stock form, but there are options to help
- Rear skid is also quite heavy and not ideal for off trail riding, but there are lots of options to lighten it up
- Not sure what stock gearing is on the 13's but there's a definite benefit to dropping 1-2 teeth on the top gear to get some more low end grunt
- The stock front end leaves a bit to be desired in terms of getting the sled on its side - I recently purchased a Mountaintech crossover setup that I'm still dialing in
- Before I had the front end my sled was in no way comparable to my buddies 08' Summit, I'd like to try again with the new front end.

Misc.
- Tunnel icing issues - many solutions available
- Relay issues - red relay solution
- Weak subframe issues - grizz gusset to the rescue (weaker on the earlier year models)
- Skis - like all sleds Nytro's benefit from aftermarket skis
- Terrible stock hand warmers - Fix is Yamaheater or it seems like others are happy with a certain model of RSI aftermarket warmers
- As mentioned above they seemed to be reasonably priced if you shop around
- It's easy to get OEM parts
- There's a fair amount of aftermarket/performance support
- Stock steering post location is awkward - OFT or BOP relocate
- Exhaust donuts disappear fast - replace with copper donuts
- Clutch is quite noisy which is annoying but it doesn't hurt performance
- I've only "raced" 3 sleds which were all Skidoo's - 600 carb, 600 etec, and 800 renegade ptek. The 600's fell back and the 800 ptek and I traded wins depending on who got the whole shot. I'll admit I was happily surprised on the 800 as my sled is stock other than a Ultra-Q exhaust and was running a much taller lug track.

Hope that helps.

He ride a 2017 axys 800 assault, 144 right now. He loves his poo, but is getting sick of buying pistons, cylinders, and cranks.

I think he'd be a lot happier with the reliability but I don't think he'd be happy with the power/weight change unless the Nytro has a turbo and he spends some money on suspension upgrades... Any reason for the Nytro over something like a Sidewinder?

He was thinking supercharger

There are a couple really sweet hybrid custom builds out there. I believe one on this forum is a Nypro - Nytro powerplant in a modified Polaris Pro chassis.
