I meant that the only fair resolve is to get him a 2017 unless they have a fix for this issue, after the 1st rod failure they they took a motor out of a 2016 since no motors were available he asked for a 2015 motor and Yamaha said no

They'll fix the problem. Unfortunately it has to be fixed again, but don't expect a sidewinder outta the deal...just not Gona happen. It's too bad your buddy has experienced all this, but yamaha will make it right!
