Charging the battery via leads should be no problem. I have done this myself. Use a 2 Amp charge with auto shut off and if possible use a microprocessor controlled charger as they perform very well.
Adjust your track to spec. I have mine set at spec and have no ratcheting.

Those are made specifically for jumping. That white plug that is right there by them is specifically for the Optimate charger that Yamie dealers sell.

My Vector track was ratcheting just a little, and I checked the tension yesterday and indeed it was loose. Fine dealer setup mine got.
