Now that I'll be running the quiet, smoke free 4 stroke, I'm sure I can get my 5 year old daughter out for some rides. Any tips on good helmets and where to get them for young kids?
My kid has been riding since she was 3 and now is 5 (6 in march).
My first helmet for her was a full face one from ski-doo, it was black and looked good .
Now she is in a coldwave one , full face again.
Some of my opinions , I was told to watch the weight of the helmest as they may be able to hold them up in the showroom but bouncing around is different , look for a light one ( the doo one is light)
Also I added a mountain strap to the hamdlebars on my sled so my kid has something to hang onto,my opinion a great idea
I know some places make neck braces for kids , I didnt use one or dont now but I might look into it as I feel it is a good idea
Good luck , my kid loves it hopefully yours will too

I'd agree with ger, a neck brace is a super idea. Little ones don't have the strength, nor would they brace themselves like adults do in the event of a crash.

I bought my 6 year old a ladies modular X small, it fits well. I found the modular really handy, you can talk to them and them to you. You can wpie noses, and eat and drink without having to take it off too! She also thinks it's cool cause she matches mom and dad. before with a regular adults, i was using a heavy baclava and then a knit hat to try and snug it up. With it loose it wants to flop all over. She would complain it was always hurting her neck, untill I tighten it up. You can also use some sort of spacer inside, like what ya use in a bike helmut.Kinda like sponge pads. they work well acrossed the forehead area to tighten it up.

If you are looking for a neck brace for the kids, I would think a relatively inexpensive and several different sizes should be available would be a hockey neck brace. Should have enough support for their head and somewhat comfortable.
Just a suggestion.

My son has been riding with me since he was 4, we have always used a full face helmet with various neck supports and head covers. One thing to do for your own comfort/benefit is to tape/attach a sponge to the rear of her helmet right where the back of her helmet and the bottom front of your helmet meet, this surely takes away from the annoying cracking sound when your 2 helmets collide on rough trails or when you lean forward. Very advisable! I have a strap/contraption that I bought back when my son was that young that allowed him to sit in front of me and to be held in place, attached to me, this was sold as a snowmobile safety item for kids and it served it's purpose until he was 7. If you would like just PM me and I will pass this item along to you at no charge.
Good Luck, be safe,

I never thought about the banging of the helmets . I am going to try your foam idea . My kid cracks my helmet all the time

I got 3 kids all in full face helmets. My 7 year old wears a HJC xsmall. My 5 and 4 year olds have choko xxxsmall. All three are black and look really good on dad's black rx1. They also wear a long scarf around their neck and up against the bottom of the helmet. No drafts and supports their heads quite well. Take a piece of the one sided sticky foam normally used to go between a truck topper and the bed of you truck to keep from knocking heads. The mountain grab handle is a great idea.

I love the sponge or double stick foam tape idea! I get the cracking on my TTR225 and my RX-1 all the time.
My kids wear white HJC CLX2 helmets because they (like black) go with any color and I'm not painted into a particular machine color. They are moto style helmets. They both have quick straps and googles.
I have use a mountains strap for years on my MSRX and my TTR225 motorcycle. The kids must think they come standard on all bikes/sleds.
I also use Collett communicators and the kids just love to be able to yap the entire time (they do with or without the communicators)
I also have the kid carriers. They can either be used to carry kids in front or behind you. Once the kids are too big to be in front of you I use the handles that are on a kidney belt for them to have a positive place to hang on. Good luck.
