left my rx1 out overnight!! still not sure what happened?

so here's the deal went out for a day of skiing with the rx1, i was breaking trail into a 'honey hole' being followed by a friend on an old school phazer. as long as i packed the trail a few times he was able to creep along. the plan was to sled to a point, leave the sleds and start climbing and skiing. well inevitably on the way in i got stuck turning around in the waist deep pow, the front end was pointing near vertical and going up hill. not a major deal i've been stuck before, there were a few down trees making it a bit more interesting but still doable for 1 person. so i dug a little and worked the sled back and forth, shutting it off and on after a few quick burst (i love reverse). so at this point the theory is to run the sled up the ramp and out of the hole!

(at this point in the day i have about an 1/8th of a tank of fuel.)

so i stand off to the side of the sled and push and give it WOT, and she climbs out of the hole and immediately stalls. great i'm unstuck so i pack up my stuff and i'm ready to lead on however the sled will not start?? maybe it's flooded= full choke okay it start runs a second and stalls? again and again and again??? it won't run without full choke and then only for a few seconds, what the heck is going on, so i level the machine thinking the fuel is in the back of the tank and maybe the fuel line has an air lock of sort and fuel isn't being drawn into the fuel pump?? checked fuses, still no start...

so i leave the sled for about 4 hours and come back hoping all will be well and it'll just start. nope! i inevitably run the battery dead!!!!!!!!!!!! so we decide to attempt towing it home with the old school phazer. after a few near death attempts and crazy acrobats we called it, i pull the battery and we head for the truck on the phazer. the rx1 would have to fend for its self against the wolfs!

next morning we had back with a freshly charged battery and more fuel!! it's got to start, no go. just turns over and over and over!!! eventually the battery dies, again. we attempt towing it with the phazer again and the snow had setup enough overnight that we were able to tow it out!! getting the sled onto the trailer was another death defying act but all went well and i was able to trailer it home.

so i'm home and i hook it up to the battery charger and run it thru another cycle and it still will not start!!! so i go get the ether (starting fluid) spray it in the air box, hit the key and bam it starts and runs like nothing was ever wrong????? so i charge up the battery to full and call it good, later in the day i get a chance to head to the hills for a few hours so i take the sled and cell phone out for a trial and it ran great! took it out again yesterday and again it ran great?

i know there's a less learned in the scenrio! the winter season crepted up on us this year and all the sudden it went from summer to winter! i had gone thru the sled before hand and had all my survial gear but when it came down to it i couldn't get the sled going again in the BC and that's a very bad lonely feeling. thankfully we were limited by the capability of the old school phazer or it could have been a very long hard ski back to the truck. i've thought maybe my battery isn't powerful enough i went with a lightwieght Yuasa YTZ10S Battery? but this has never been a probablem even after rolling the sled over and needing to turn it over for a minute or 2 when it's flooded. is there a problem with my fuel pump?

anyway i've gone ahead and ordered a new battery, probably should do this every year! i've looking for a set of jumper cables the kind you can use to jump start off a 2 stroke? and i went back thru my tools and survival pack.

any thoughts as to what maybe going on?? i truely trusted the rx1 to get me home it's sort of my escape valve and now i'm a little more skeptical?? often times we just take the rx1 and 2up or tow skiers for miles into the bc.

Freaky

Wow, freaky deal... glad you were able to get back out, even though sounds like it burned up a few good days for you! :-/

If it were flooded, would have thought that the next day it would have popped off for you, and if it would have been fuel-starved I would have thought that a couple battery's worth of cranking w/ choke would have had it catch. When you sprayed ether in the airbox, did you just spray it down near the intake, or take the airbox lid off?

I think I've read a few things about fuel pumps going bad on here, but don't recall the specifics? Anyhoo, that's probably as likely a suspect as anything.

Good luck getting it figured out!

BTW, turbo top-end on the t-vec is wicked! ;)! It's a handful, need to figure out the lag and how to deal w/ it, but overall it's a wicked fun ride! Only went out a few days w/ Bruce, Brian, and Jim, but was a great week out there (saw the griz feeding on the elk before tower, etc.)

I would say you ran it out of fuel and the pumps lost there prime. Next time you can pull off the vent line, right behind clutch cover and blow into it untill you feel pressure and try staring it or use a bottle of propane. Much easier on the motor then the either. Same principle just crack the bottle open in front of the intakes and it fires up.

I drained my battery twice just sitting in the shop and trying to getting it going first time this year. gave it a shot of propane of off she went.

you flooded it and the plugs where wet fouled to the point it wouldn't fire the gas. A little fire in a can dried the plugs and it ran. Change the plugs before it does it to you again. Maxdlx

freeheeler... I'm voting for fouled plugs too. If you were doing a lot of slow, low rpm, low manifold pressure type riding when you got stuck I could easily see why it was running rich.

Typically if an engine won't give indications of starting up right away, before I run the battery down, I go through the air-fuel-spark checklist. Pull plugs and turn engine over to clear cylinders, hold plugs against a ground and look for spark, pull fuel lines to carbs to see if you're getting fuel, check to see that you're getting air through the plenum. If all three of those things check out then the bugger should start.

BTW... ordered a reverse kit and a rider forward kit for my RX-1. The journey (twisted path?) has begun :)

To verify flooded or starved, and starved is more than likely.
My 03 needs a squirt across the carbs regardless how much choke I try if it sat extended.

Recharge, do the squirt, and immediate fire.
It would be nice to insert a window in fuel line to verify flow from pump, but I suspect your low fuel had much to do with it than anything.

One might want to add to survival bag a stretch of poly hose that could extend to bottom of fuel tank, and draw a small amount out to splash in the carbs.

same symptoms last weekend in the up pulled it out of the trailor ran great stoped for breakfast afterward she wouldnt start...almost ran the battery dead.went to ace hardware in St.Ingnace replaced the plugs end of problem

yep it gets a little scary thinking of walking out 10+ miles new plugs and battery are being installed, plus a can of starting fluid in the truck

has anyone used those charger cables that attach to the light fixture of the 2 strokes??

I have a buddy who is doing our mods to an apex. He bought it cheap (wreaked) and has been piecing it back together. It had been running great but had a weak battery. All of a sudden it would not start. Had spark, fuel but would not even pop on starting fluid. Changed plugs and fired right up. My sled started running crappy at the beginning of the season so I threw new plugs in. Cleaned it right up. In 8k miles on my sled and all these other tons around here we have never changed plugs and had it fix a problem. Weird.

I'm with Culvert. It sounds to me like you ran it out of gas.

1/8 of a tank
Steep angle
Would only fire with the choke.

Sometimes they take FOREVER to draw fuel once the pumps go dry.
