adding 12 volt plug

Hi, wondering if i would have any problems adding a 12 volt plug in to the rear storage compartment of a 2014 Venture gt? I want to be able to add power for the heated visor back there so i dont have cords running all over the place when riding two up. I guess my question is can i piggy back it to the lighter port on dash or should i run it to the battery direct with a fuse able link . Thanks! RCR

you can do either or, heated shield shouldnt draw more then an amp or so, but i would run a new wire with a fuse direct from the battery to the back.

thanks for quick reply, want to get this done in case it snows. I am using a lighter type power supply in case i want to use it for other purposes. i picked up a lighter plug to rca adapter for the shield and will be carefull not tot leave anything plugged in to draw power when not running. Thanks !

I would 'piggyback' it if you're not going to draw a lot of amps.... the reason is you would continue to use the key switch ON/OFF, and not have to remember to unplug something...

What would be considered a big draw on the 12 volt plug. A cell phone charging or gps charging I think would be ok. It would be a little nicer if I could wire it into the 12 volt plug already there...keep it cleaner. Thanks for the input guys

Garmin 2XX and 5XX GPS' draw less than 1 amp. A couple of times my Doo Mod 2 heated shield popped the 3A fuse on my 05 Vector. Put in a 5A and no problems.

I'd run a line direct to the battery. It's not hard but that's just me.

the time it takes to cut into the harness find the existing 12v plug wire, seal it up etc etc i myself would just run a line to the battery,if your using it to power a heated shield most of the time your gonna be unplugging it when you get off the sled anyway so its not like its running when your not there but its totally your personal preference.

i ran a 10ga wire to the back of my sled incase i ever want to hook up a sleigh with lights or if i need anything thats gonna draw a little more then normal i have it there, princess auto sells lighted toggle switches and outlets so you know when its on if you wanted to go that route as well. I just think why go through the work of piggy backing when its the same to just run a bigger wire in the first place. Up to you and yes go with the biggest fuse your wire size will allow, and make sure its all water tight
