I am fairly new to sledding. Ive been reading a lot of threads during the summer and learned quite a bit. Some of the lingo is still greek. Anyways I picked up a 04 mtn in march and put about 800 km on. love the sled but had a few problems with it. I had the jets and carb springs changed. that made a bit of difference. My sled seemed to bog out if left idling or if tipped on the side for a short period of time. It would take a few minutes to get it out the system .I have called quite a few yamy dealers and each one of them have a different solution. Do the carb bowls on an 04 need to be changed? Does there need to be a shut off valve to the coolant lines to the carbs? I am fromt the foothills of alberta and ride a range of elevations from about 3500ft to 8000ft in golden-revy etc. :o| Also looking to add some aftermarket garb right a way. What is the biggest bang for the buck. Looing to spend $1500 to $2000. Appreciate all the help. I have a score to settle this winter with my buddies that lowered themselves to ski-poo and polaris. :rocks:

If you put the machine on its side, it WILL stall out (if running), and will be hard to start. Thats normal for all 4-stroke engines. Don't put it on its side except for VERY brief moments with the engine OFF, doing otherwise could cause severe damage. If you idle it, it shouldn't be a problem unless you idle it for long enough for it to get real hot. Putting a valve on the carb heater line should help with idling.

Carb bowls

There was a factory directive to check all 04 mnt units for improper float level. Floats could cause flooding if not set to the right level in the carbs. Might by why she acts funny when you get her over for a second.

Also to avoid the warm start issue, which requires the throttle to be cracked open to start a warm engine, you install a coolant shut off to the carbs. Leave it off unless the temps are real cold, then crack it about 1/5 way open as needed. Gets rid of the problem.

Lots of mods you can do if you want. Choice is yours and as to what you want to have the sled do. If you ride powder, you will want the better powder skiis, and make sure who ever sets the sled up for you that they set the sled for powder riding which is wholly lot different than trail riding.

If set correctly, you can gas the machine and lift the skiis off the powder which means you "float" better but this can cause problems if you need sharp turning on trails. You choose what you want.

Also should get the add on heat exchanger to broaden the cooling system and I would also add a fuel shut off (two lines) so that trailering the sled won't cause the carbs to jiggle gas into the engine and dilute the oil.

Where does the fuel shutoff go? I read in my manual this can be a problem (trailering with a full tank)

I wasn't aware that there was a notice on the float levels of the '04s but as I was reading your post that is exactly what it sounded like.

Also install a carb coolant shut off.

Basically take the advice that Smokeless gave you. :D

As for your money here is what I would suggest:
A 159 and extrovert drivers.
Powder Pro skis
MPI transfer kit
Left hand throttle
Light weight battery, remove battery bracket, relocate battery
Remove retarded tool box and any extra tools
and lastly if you still have some $$ left a white knuckle exhaust

That list should lose something around 25+ pounds and increase your performance and handling.
