I have a 2011 apex xtx that is studded and was running excel wheels in the skid. Within 1000 km s I find out that the inner idler wheels have disintegrated because of the studs. I was thinking I would try a billet type wheel because rubber will simply not last. anyone know a good place to buy billet wheels.

I sell billet wheels but they won't hold up to running over studs either. Can you reposition the offending studs?

I just had to replace my Excel wheels on my XTX too, right by the front skid shock. Studs!! 171 studs, apprx. 1800 miles on the wheels. Had them on a different sled last year and put them on my current one which had just over 1400 miles at time of change.

I was thinking of running strictly billet aluminum wheels with no rubber on them, do you still think that they would not hold up. the wheels that disintegrated for me were also the front ones by the shock.

Studs are going pound billet wheels like a hammer. The vibration would be annoying enough even before screwing up a few hundred dollars worth of billet wheels.

you need to make sure your studs are tight enough and you have the head of the stud pulled into the track to help reduce this from happening. I had the same issue and i retighened them all because the previous owner had the dealer install the studs. They didn't tighten them enough and they had them too close to the centre of the track, which damaged the bottom of the front shock and the top of the rear shock. i have since removed them all and repositioned them away from the middle (also added more studs) and added the bearing kit to the top of the rear shock. I just went on a trip this past weekend so i will be checking my front lower inside idlers to see if this helped elimanate this problem. if this didn't help then i will try to figure out a way to take those idlers out from the inside of the rails and place them on the outside where i have no studs. i'm thinking this shouldn't be too hard to do.

anyone with any brains wouldnt have put the studs where a idler has to run them over.

First off, nice comment. Second, if studs are installed properly, the idlers will pass over them with no issue.Groomer08 said:anyone with any brains wouldnt have put the studs where a idler has to run them over.

What does Excel say about all this? I had one of their wheels delaminate (track not studded), and they replaced it at no charge, no questions asked. I was told by Excel that it was only their 2nd wheel to come back in that condition, with thousands sold.

what a stupid comment buddy.
my oversize idlers are not from excel but rather from Royal (i believe Kimpex makes these) who sells them here in Canada. i have the same problem because i beleive the rubber is too soft. Like I mentioned earlier i have tighened up the studs so i will check this week to see how these made out.
as above the studs are installed correctly and where there suppose to be (according to woody's template) There is no way you could add studs to the centre of the track and not have some run where the idlers run. that would only leave you approx 4 inches to work with and that would include the centre of the track where your not suppose to install them. so how the he!! are your suppose to avoid that????
besides i'm running 192 on both my SRX's and they are installed in the centre and the outside where the idlers run and have never had any issues whatsoever.

its definitely not an excell problem, I have lost factory wheels in the past as well because of studs. like it was mentioned earlier you cant run studs in the centre or your front shock will wear out due to studs making contact with the bottom of the shock. so that leaves us not much real estate to install studs where neither the idler wheels nor the shock will be affected. That is why I figured billet wheels could possibly be the answer. From the suggestions of many ppl it seems that billet wheels will not be the answer either.
