Did you peel off the plastic protectors? There is also one on the inside.

i've fried the cords, never the shield. i did have one that was on a cheap helmet that would melt snow, ice and freezing rain it was so hot - the higher end ones i'm running now are not as hot.

Sounds like you just got a defective unit...what brand?
only had the protective film on the outside. wires run around the inside edge. it's a CKX.

i run a ckx - mine doesn't get hot enough to melt butter, but it doesn't fog up either.

Check it again. All the CKX heated shields I have seen have the protective film on both sides. It is hard to see. If the shield is not perfectly clear, it is there.
Sheilds will warp while connected while sled not moving. This will happen if your connection is one of those "direct to the battery" and that you leave helmet connected on sled while you go dine.
Could be you case ?
Could be you case ?
i have it plugged into the 12v outlet so if the sled isn't running it's not on.
