My dealer has a leftover black one that I am interested in if the price is right. Any opinions on the ride and handling with the basic shock package would be appreciated.

I just demo'd an ltx dx and a ltx se. I thought the dx was a bit harsh riding compared to the se. If your getting a sweet deal though go for it. If you don't like the shocks, Fox has the qs3's or the 1.5s on ebay all the time.

Yeah. The black sled looks great. You should be able to adjust the shocks. If not upgrade them.

I find my DX plush and comfortable. Leave the springs soft for the first 500 km, then adjust centre and rear to weight. Change the skis...tuners are awful

I have the zr900 lxr which is the AC twin to the DX. Rear shocks are way to soft, I bottomed out like crazy on any size bumps and even after adjusting the front track shock and rear torsion springs it rode harsh on small bumps and still bottomed badly on mid size and bigger bumps on my first ride. Pulled the shocks after that thrashing I took and sent them to hygear. Re-valved and center spring changed to a dual rate spring. Now it rides good on small to large bumps, very happy with the out come, rides like I knew it could or should have from the factory. I am 205 lbs without gear for what it's worth. I would say unless you ride Quebec smooth trails or ride at a snail's pace then get the next stiffer model, for cat it's a sno pro, not sure on Yamaha LE or SE?

The skis I put on are Pilot 6.9s. See the thread from Rocker Dan on this site

I am 240 lbs dressed and the DX shocks work great once you break in the springs and adjust preload to weight. Once they pooch out I may go With QS3Rs

I see you're moving from a Nytro, which is exactly what I did. I had an '09 and bought a 2015 Viper L-TX DX, black. Where I had spent time and $ getting the Nytro to handle, the Viper was sweet right out of the box. It's still stock except for the touring windshield, around 1,400 miles. Great all around sled. The '15 has the 137" track, '16 has 141" track and not sure what other changes from '15 to '16. Same sweet motor as the Nytro. Just curious - what's the dealer asking for the leftover, what year?

I would add, regarding skis, when I changed to the tuners on the Nytro they definitely helped by reducing steering effort. On the Viper I just kept the stock tuners and changed the scags to 6" inside and 4" outside. I still do get some darting with that setup.
