Looking to get a sled ( '15 Viper LTX) from lower MI to northeast WI (8 hr trip). Kind of a long trip to use my 4 place open face trailer. I especially dislike taking it any long distance empty because it bounces around a bit with no weight. Was wondering about renting a trailer. I see u haul is nearby and has a 6x12. Doubt there's anything for tie downs, but maybe not needed? Thoughts on this or what minimum size should be for a 137?

An LTX will fit in that. I think most of there open trailers have short sides on them. Not sure what cost is but should work for you.

I brought my 137 XTX home in a u-haul 6x12. Only thing I did was get some plywood to throw under the sled so it doesn't wreck the trailer and get you charged u-hauls insane damage fees. I cut 3 sheets of plywood to fit the 6x12 inside with 1 layer of plywood over the full floor of the trailer and just parked the sled on it. No brake or tiedowns and it didn't move.
If you stack plywood on plywood it could move though.

Excellent. Thanks for the responses. SidewinderConvert, did you have the enclosed or open 6x12 u haul?
Jon, I would like to just use my truck, but it's just me and the Ms going. So, I won't have enough lifting help to get it in and out of the truck.

I used the enclosed one. Just backed up to a snowbank and drove it right in.

I rented an enclosed u haul to move my daughter out of U.W.OshKosh and it worked great. It sits very low to the ground so a little ramp or some old lumber for the skis to ride up on should work fine. I believe the floor is aluminum so if its studded you may need to lay down some thick cardboard or plywood which was previously mentioned. Just make sure the door width will work for an enclosed.

If you have pickup truck buy a d good tri-fold ramp much cheaper and easier to haul .

when it is just me going sledding, i use the ramp and put the sled in the box of the truck. do the same with atv and motorcycle as well. ramp is only around $120 up here with the ski plastic on it for the carbides witch i say is a must. destroyed another ramp without them with just wear bars on the skis. that sucked.

For those of you using just the box of the truck, what size is the box? I have a '17 GMC Sierra, which is a tad less than 6'. It appears that the sled would actually hang out about 2' (all the way to tip of snow flap) yet, even with tailgate down. Is that ok?

I have a 2017 Ford F-150 with a 6.5' bed, my sled is a STX GT Sidewinder which is a tad over 11', it does hang over the tailgate but I have no problem using the truck to move my sled. I use the trifold aluminum ramps, it all fits nicely, Just be sure to set your parking break on the sled and strap everything down tightly, I lock my ramp when its in the back of the truck to prevent theft and keep it securely on the truck. I strap the skies to the front tie down loops in the front and also use a strip in the back, the back strap is probably not needed but it makes everything look more secure, I really don't want to get pulled over for a potential violation so the back strap goes on. It all works well together. JoeFor those of you using just the box of the truck, what size is the box? I have a '17 GMC Sierra, which is a tad less than 6'. I bought a Vector Ltx last year and used my p/u to transport it. Used a 4x8 3/4 “ sheet of plywood and supported it with two 2/4s underneath to use as a ramp. Cut 2 holes in corner of plywood for ties. Ran the sled up under power then the seller and I lifted the plywood and slid it in the bed. Was really easy. When unloading with just my wife and I, tied the straps to a tree and slowly pulled forward until I could slide the plywood ramp down then just backed the sled off.

Bought a Caliber Ramp Pro a couple years ago for solo trips. Best investment I've ever done. My reasoning with my wife was an ER trip would cost more than the ramp

i use an 8' aluminum trifold ramp and i have an 8' box. only the flap sticks out past the tailgate on my xtx sleds. i just throw a strap either from the bumper or through the rear suspension to hold it in the box of the truck.
hauled in 6' box trucks the same way but i usually need the room to haul so i only buy the 8' ones.

Well, I got talked into just using the truck. I will say loading was a pain in the @$$, but we got it home safe and sound. About an 18 hr round trip ordeal. Also of note, don't buy Harbor Freight ratchet straps. Anyway, now the proud owners of a '15 Viper LTX SE. Time to accessorize.
