How are these two sleds geared from the factory? (top and bottom teeth) I was told by a dealer that the Attak is geared taller. Is that true? If so, why being the Attak is running the longer track?

Attack is geared shorter-23/38
Apex short track is geared- 24/38

Would the Apex gain anything by going to the 23 gear?

In theory you will lose some topend and gain some acceleration. But changes in gearing also affects clutching. So if the clutches open too quickly or don't open fully you may see results you didn't plan on.

Good explanation.

Well then the dealer wasn't right then on what he said about the Attak being geared taller. He did say his demo Attak will outrun his GT everytime. It probably accelerates and hooks up better in a given distance.

If the season wasnt so crappy around here, I would consider gearing my ER down by 1 tooth on the top just to see how it works. The top end on this sled is incredible. I would give some up to get a bit more low end pull.

I have an rtx . droped to 22 tooth on top switched to .750 camoplast track with 144 1.205 chisels up the middle from woody's. went to 10lbs. of air in the fox floaters and pulled the limiter strap up all the way with a stock clutch set up and I had to sit on the gas tank for launch and it would still stand straight up. Best it would do top end was about 109 on the speedo.
(by the way we were running on the lake)smooth ice. but holy #*$&@ would it get there quick, switched it back to the 24 t still launched hard but easier to control and the top end came back up to 127 yammamiles ph. I myself am new to the whole yamaha brand jumped from skidoo this year because i got sick and tired of putting motors in them. I don't know if this helps you at all, but i thought i wood give you my 2cents on my gearing exp. good luck!

But if NOSPRO can run Nitrous and get 127 on the gun, on his Attack with stock gearing, then I'd say the sled is over geared.

This has been on my mind big time.
NosPros and SwissSledders Attaks are faster than Bluedogs and my Apexs. IT WAS NOT TRACTION!

2 weekends ago it was warming into the 40s and we were on softening hardpack, and really the tracks on all 4 machines I'd have to say stuck like glue on the lake runs.

A few people I know and trust here told me to change the gear and today UPS delivered my goodie package from Port yamaha.

Wont know till I get up to the cabin and swap it out. I predict no loss of top end, and a possible gain.

Good point in that NosPro on the bottle does 127, so there is room for a gear change

Yes 127 was what you guys on the lake that day saw, terry has gone even faster than that with stock gearing, but remember he has the extra power to pull it out just as far as it can go,we dont.

UM....Ok
but that means he is shifting out further and we cant, because of less power.
That does help prove my case on the gear change, or am I not getting your post??

I would believe these guys aren't telling you everything.... :drink:

If the Apex is overgeared then that should mean you aren't getting full shift on the clutches and therefore a reduced theoretical top speed. So gearing shorter will reduce the load and allow the clutches either fully shift or get closer to a full shift than with the stock gearing, but now you have conflicting changes as the gear change with reduce top speed and the more fully shifted clutches will increase top speed. SO I guess you need to find that balance.
From the results of the nitrous sled it's plain to see it is overgeared in the stock setup, unless his max RPM is higher than a stock sled.
