Heard today that a few of the valves were bad. My dad is not going to fix it. Almost $4,000 in parts and labor.

Wow ! bummer... time to piece it apart and sell parts .may get more out of it then selling out right!
If ya decide to sell parts i will buy some things .

Al's snowmobile is buying it from him.
I wonder how much a 2 stroke costs to rebuild. I'm guessing most 2 strokes would require 2-3 rebuilds in 18,000 miles. At $4,000 to fix the Apex I think it is probably a wash.

Not a wash even if money is the same.... one fail instead of 3-4. Lots of lost riding there!

is al's where they diagnosed the problem? I'd get a second opinion, it's always sketchy when the dealer/employee offers to buy it

I've been to Al's. It is a stand up place. Too large to fool with ripping off people. Too many employees and some would Rat out on the boss.

The Yamaha Dealer where my father purchased the sled new diagnosed it. He called Al's after he found out how much it was going to cost to see what they would give him for it.

Loss of compression due to valve issues typically are a result of:
-burned valves...too lean
-worn or cracked valve seats...high mileage
-bent valves...over revving so valves hit pistons
-bent valves...broken or badly stretched cam chain so valves hit pistons
-incorrect valve clearances
-badly carboned valves
Unlike traditional rocker arm valve mechanisms, "bucket and shim" valve trains, like on the Apexs, typically close up the valve clearances at higher mileages due to valve seat recession and valve stretch. This can result in valves not seating fully and causing a loss of compression in the affected cylinder.
Modern valves rarely burn and unless the engine has been over revved to the point the valves have contacted the pistons.
IMO:
If this was my Apex I would first put a large quantity of Sea Foam in the fuel[ex: 4 bottles/tank] and ride it at an easy pace[NO WIDE OPEN] until I ran the fuel through it. If you are real lucky this would uncarbon the valves and you would be good to go.[a long shot]
If the Sea Foam didn't work I would then check/adjust the valves as if nothing is damaged this is your most likely culprit.
I have numerous motorcycles that use bucket and shims including a 1980 Honda 6 cylinder CBX with 24 valves...I have seen this before!
Before I gave the sled away I would take the time to investigate a bit.
