I have a 209 Apex that current has the low sporty windshield. Too cold. I bought a "tall", 16" windshield SMA-8FT96-30-BK. I didn't know it requires brackets which came with it. I really don't want to mess with the brackets so I'm wondering if anyone has tried these without. If they are really needed then I'll probably return it for the Medium - 14-1/4 size.
Thanks,

You probably need them or the windshield will probably fold down to the handlebars. On my 2013 the high windshield has 4 plastic short brackets to stiffen it up and it still folds down at high speed. The older models have the metal stiffeners that probably work better but are a bit of a pain to install. Gotta love the high one when the temperature drops, I won't ride with out one now.

X2...
Installed the tall this year on my 11. I was on the warmest sled this weekend. Even warmer than my buddies GSX SE.

The windshield will fold at abot 90-95 mph. Keep her under that and its ok. That being said, it is alot of strain on the little screws and headlight pod even at lower speeds, but if you only cruise at 40-50 I would say your safe to run without. You will get used to it with them installed though. It's all apart of your riding and aging process and, whats important when your ride, looks or comfort, your choice.

I have a 06er with that shield and the supports are still in the bubble wrap they came in. The shield has seen triple digits everything seems to work the way it should but I did save them
. I haul my sled in a enclosed trailer I have over 1,000 miles with it and have been happy running it without supports.

Have the tall windshield on my Apex because I modified the seat to raise it 4" and added an 5" riser to the bars because of the seat and with the new seating position I had to run the tall windshield and I tried to run without the support bars and it would fold down at speed and also broke the plastic screws that hold the shield in place, so yes you have to use the support bars
Thanks for the help. I'll mount the brackets if I decide to keep it. Can anyone comment on how the medium shield compares? Again, I'm currently using the short/low one.
Thanks all,
Smurf

medium is a good shield but plenty od wind still gets by mostly by the hands. put 10,000 miles on with that shield and only had cold hands till i got a yamaheater controller then no cold at all.

medium is good until you raise the seat. I used wind deflectors for the hands with the medium shield. Installed a 2"
taller seat last year and the wind hit me in the throat. Now have the tall windshield with supports and the top does
start to bend at around 90 mph so you need the supports. Oh I have a 2" rox riser and 5'10" tall.

5'9" with a stock seat and the medium height windshield works well for me. With my MX style helmet I just need to tip my head down slightly for all the wind to go over my head
If I were driving in -40 temps all day then I think I would opt for the Xlarge shield.
