I posted about this topic on another thread a while back. A few months ago I spoke with the President of the MSA (Michigan Snowmobile Association) Don Reed also the owner of the Fox River Motel in Seney Mi. He gave me a run down on the new noise law here in Michigan. The exhaust will have to be no louder then 88 dB's at 4,000 RPM's taken from 12 feet away. He said that what they are trying to crack down on are those individuals who feel the need to bark the engine in town or late at night in residential area or when just cursing through town or getting gas etc. They are looking for the obnoxious riders. He also told me that he rides with someone that has an Excell pipe and that the Excell will not have a problem meeting the requirements.

Here is a pic of the Excell with the side panels painted to match the factory red.

thanks iceman, that is what i thought!!!!!

i also, think sound regulations for snowmobiles are to strict when compared to harly's with modified exhaust, but i also understand that harly's do not need permission from property owners to operate, whereas snowobiles do. thats where the whole problem comes from. we lose private property owners permission to run the trail through there land and we're screw'd. until an aftermarket exhaust company can prove there system will pass the new laws, i will stick with stock and enjoy the ride.

the law was just passed 03/03/08....the tickets will be flying next season as I've been told ...especially in populated areas..

also..if you read msa's write up..they are suggesting that trail fees will increase...

nice...charging more most likely for the equipment to ticket us!

Well to be honest i could care less if someone thinks my sled is too loud ! If they want to put down their chainsaws , weedwackers , leaf blowers and every thing else that is as loud or louder than a sled that has a pipe then ill be happy to do the same . . I live in the sticks and my closest neighbor is a half mile away . and he makes more noise than i do on a regular basis . . Im just looking for a way to make my sled bark without dropping the kids colledge funds to do it ! .

you want a little bark cheaply? or you want a lot of bark?

cheapest is to gut the stock can and reweld....after that is a sno stuff exhaust...better yet is the skinz exhaust....but it's slightly quieter than the sno stuff and made a lot better...the there's the mbrp...made extremely well but costly...lastly the excell...
I didnt include the hauck system cause i feel it offers to many compromises...

Aaron used to offer different length inserts that controlled the db level but I don't see them on his site, give him a call if interested enough.

I think the problems with the inserts is to work effectively they hold heat into the motor and greatly reduce the power benefit...

Toasty!

Just agreeing - They get plenty hot, this is a shot from Aaron & Alan Ulmer doing product development (Dyno shot) on the Nytro - Pipe & clutch calibration effort.
The more restriction the more heat build up, I think Aaron had shorter inserts on his site for Race Tune and not for trail application.
Just FYI - Alan Ulmer drove from SD to central NY to do this with Aaron - That’s a 60 hour round trip driving - You talk about dedication to product development of his product.

iceman.... lets take your machine to the oakland county sheriffs and get the test done ?

sj, I would like to get my Excell tested but my daughters graduation party is a few weeks away and I am swamped with work around the house. After her party we are going on a fishing trip so I wouldn't be able to take it until the middle of August.

This has been coming for a long time, I'm surprised it actually took this long.

I like a quality exhaust note, like the Excell, I'm just not interested in pissing everyone off, that's why I don't have one. Hopefully these sound test standards will help get some quality, light weight performance systems that can be kept quiet in town & yet perform well out on the trail.

Has anyone tested an Excel to see how close it is to passing the test?
