Finally got out on my apex GT. Have to say, quite a machine coming off a 95 500 Indy. I really enjoy driving it. The White Knuckle exhaust is a bit much though...lol. Anyway, last night I went out to go for a quick ride in the field. Turned the key on to cycle though the gauge and let the pump build up. I always do this,...Not sure if it's needed or not..Anyway, turned the key to start it and nothing. Yellow warning light comes on and stays on when I have the key turned and goes out when I let go. I flipped the key half a dozen times with nothing.. By this time I was starting to worry. I hit the key a couple more times and it whirled over. Worked great the rest of the evening
This morning I got up and went out in curiousity to see if it would start first crack. Nope. I had to turn the key on and off half a dozen times before it whirled over. Again, all the dash lights come on and I cant hear anything clicking or buzzing when the key is in the start possition. It's just dead.
Anywheres to look?? Saftety switches? Seems like something is getting a bad connection, I just don't know where to start to look.. Thanks in advance!!

First thing that comes to mind is maybe connections on the kill switch? Sorry, not much help...

I am going to go over the kill, but what came to my mind was that if it was faulty, you wouldnt think the gauge lights would come on. With the kill down, there isn't any power anywhere. Seems to be something in the key switch..or some kind of solenoid or relay somewhere thats sticking...bad ground? Id check these things but have no idea where to look. lol

This happened to me on the first morning of a week long trip in Quebec back in 2008. I had washed and waxed the sled in the driveway to shine the sled up before the trip. By then, there had been discussions on TY about this and I was prepared to take my relays in to the cabin to defrost them. I literally cupped my left hand around the relay and clicked the key on an off. I could feel it trying to go. After less than a minute of this, my turning the key while cupping the relay got it to start. Happened once more that week and I started it the same way. Threw a crank position code, 11 if memory serves before it started but it did start. When I got home, I was sold an "updated" relay and kept the old one in my jacket pocket.actionjack said:X2 on the Frozen starter relay.

ok thanks guys! Where would I find this relay? Above the left side foot well? Which relay is it? I'd like to pick up a new one just to have and also change this one out. Thanks again!

relay is located under hood right side, has a couple large red wires and a 10 amp fuse and a square plug connection, just under air box

In my case the relay was one of the 4 over the left footwell. Not sure which one.

I've been reading through some posts regarding hard starts.
I tried to start my 06 ER on Friday. The sled had been sitting indoors for only a week and it was only -5 Celcius (not too cold). It cranked , but not that fast. To be honest, I haven't owned the sled long enough to know what fast enough is. I know that with my EFI classic car, if it doesn't turn fast enough, the motor won't fire.
I tried 3 or 4 times (5 seconds each time). I then put a charger on the battery and a heater against the sled. It fired up right away an hour later.
I'm now worried that I may get stranded.
So.....If the relay that I'm reading about faults, does the motor still crank?
What readings should I get when I have the battery tested. I think it may be tired. Am I correct when I say it won't fire with a slow crank?
Should I change plugs? Change oil to 0W40?
I wish I tried it with a boost and not the heat. Now I'm not sure what the problem was.
Suggestions?
Will

Panterawill, If relay fails, it will NOT crank. If battery is too weak, it will not fire. 0w oil is manufacture recommended + it will spin easier. What do you have in it?? The battery should be load tested, and if there is any question, I would replace. My sled starts in sub-zero temps with no issue.
