What color should chaincase oil be? My son in law checked his and it has a light color on the dipstick, the sled has 173 miles, bought end of last season. Sled is an 07 attak. Thanks, plowking

Once, I had a Cat that had the chain case oil go cream color and kind of foamy. Changed its oil, and it happened again. Took the chain case cover off, and from the factory, there was a loose flat-washer floating around in there. It was riding between the chain and the chaincase. By the time I got to the washer, it was very thin and the all the internals and chain case itself were shot. There also were chunks of the chain case (aluminum) floating around in there. That explained the occasional hard shift from reverse and very loud racket, etc.

Water intrusion also will turn the oil white and foamy.

If your oil is changing to a lighter color, you may want to consider pulling the chain case and cover to find out what is going on. If your oil is just getting darker, do not worry about it, as long as the level is constant.
