Anybody ever extend their Apex or attak to 151"? I'm think of doing that sometime -- maybe a ZX2 skid extended. Then a 2" Challenger track.

Ant thoughts on this set up or reports from those who've done this?

Sounds awsome if your going to be in the powder all the time. Might/most likely will have issues with sliders with a high lug height like that.

Going with that track will be increased track resistance, meaning your most likely going to need extros, which are great!

Ever think of using an Expert X?, they seem to be holding up better than the vibration prone ZX2

I ride in the northern MN pow a lot... My Mnt Viper is awesome fir those rides -- but what I really, really want is my Attak to be competent in the backcountry deep of northern MN.

All of my in laws drive paddle track Doos and I'd love to show them up on the Attak!!!!

I'm thinking an extended XZ2 to 151 with extrovert drivers and powder skis. Then I'd want a 2" paddle track on there and I'd think I'd rival even the best deep powder sleds out there!

Sounds like a good idea for the deep pow. I am in the process of chaning my Apex to a 144" with the ZX-2 and a 2" challenger track.

For ultimate deep snow performance, I would go with a 144" ZX-2 skid set back to 151 or 153" to get that lower approach angle to help get you up on the snow and not trench through it. It would take a bit more work and research, but the deep snow performance would be worth it I would think.

I just spoke to Ulmer and he recommended a Hartman's rail and tunnel extension for the mono to 151"

Then adding extros and removing tunnel protectors to fit a 2" paddle track underneath.

Maybe lower gearing to spin the longer track.....

I am very intrigued by this as I could save a lot of $ over replacing the mono skid. I know I'd have to live with the higher approach angle of the mono, but Ulmer said the one's he's done float very well.

Decisions, decisions!!!!!!!!!!!! Urgh!!!!!!!!!

Mike, I've already stated MY reasons for using an Expert. I truly believe you'll be happier with an aftermarket skid with lower approach angle. That said, with the Hartman 144 extension on my Attak, and the stock skid with a 1.25 Predator track, it did AMAZINGLY well in the UP powder! I am likely in the same boat as you. I have 7 kids though LOL!! Difficult to spend $$ on sledding that you ought to spend on everyday expenses. Whatever you decide, let us know how it worked for you!!

Dave ;)!

Thanks again Viper Dave!

You have been there with helpful comments through this whole decision making process so far! Grizzly1 also lives pretty close to me and is so very helpful and he and you are right on the same page -- the XZ2 is a winner........ Others have also had incredibly great input and that is so nice. It seems they don't make the Expert skid anymore, just ZX2.

I guess I'm gonna have to save my pennies for that 151" XZ2. Of course, by then I'll probably want a 156" or something. On a side note, what skis does everybody like on extended Apex/Attaks? I've heard great hings about Powderhounds, Simmons Gen 1's and 2's, and the newer Yammi Mnt skis. I was thinking those HUGE Gen 2's would look nice on a wide ski stance Attak. The big boards would be great for floating in thr pow, that's for sure!

Mike

All in the name of decent powder performance.

I am running Slydog Powderhounds with Bergstrom 8" Triplepoints. I am very happy with this setup. Turns good on trail and work awesome off trail. Thaey are flexible in the front portion of the ski. Helps a LOT to get the sled up and out. You can ALMOST see them in my signature pic LOL! HAve you contacted AD Boivin about the expert? They still list them on their site. Every now and again I see them for sale. Mine is actually a 121 with rail extensions to 136. I then set it back 4 inches per Boivins install instructions. Good luck again with your decision !

Those Bergstrom triple points must just be wicked..... Where can you get those? I've also heard their ski savers are also just great!

I live about 15 mi. from his shop. I stop in once a month to see how he's doing. Great guy! I also run Triples on my 136'd Viper with C@A XT's, my 700 Venture and my 97 600 XTC. Skisavers and shims as well. My last trip I ran a Prototype add on for Powderhounds that made them even better. If you go that route, let me know and I'll hook you up ;)!

Wow, im on here daily and I guess I just kept missing this thread, haha

But anyways, sounds like quite the project, only good way to spend the summer!

Anyways, if your attak is anything like mine, in the powder my clutches get insane hot and I frequently blow belts, but to get more cooling I neatly ripped off all the foam down to bare plastic and aluminum in the clutch compartment. For my clutch vent, I cut out all the mesh in between the main vent chines with a dremel ( this is where the snow builds and blocks the vent = major clutch heat issues)

Next for me is creative venting ideas with some cutting involved, just to keep everything cool or not as hot!

And your going to need extros, more then you ever imagined with that huge track! I got stuck on a hill just because I ratchetted, I have a pic too, its not preety.....

YUP, move the skid back. The Attak trenches like a big dog.
I moved the skid back on my RX 4" WOW what a diff. The thing floats on the snow.
Keep us posted on your rear skid choice. I am leaning towards the 144"Timbersled skid and moving it back for a 151 foot for my Attak.

I gots no more use for a trail sled.

As for the skis C&A XT Pros. You can see them in my sig pic. I love em.
